The Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has voiced concerns over the recent government policies that have led to widespread hardship among Nigerians, specifically citing the removal of fuel subsidies and the increase in electricity tariffs.
Speaking at the 2024 Oke Ibadan festival in Ibadan, organized by the Olokun Festival Foundation, Adams highlighted the growing public discontent with these policies.
Naija News reports that during Thursday’s event, Adams pointed out that while he supports the idea of states having independent power supplies—a move he believes could bring numerous benefits—he remains critical of how recent changes have been implemented.
“One of the major policies of this administration that I applauded at the onset was the idea of having an independent power supply in the states,” Adams stated.
However, he acknowledged that the execution has fallen short of expectations, leading to increased power outages and higher costs for consumers.
“The new tariffs have become a big problem for Nigerians,” Adams said, stressing that the increase in electricity tariffs has severely impacted all sectors of the Nigerian economy.
Similarly, he described fuel subsidy removal as another policy that has significantly contributed to the hardship, driving the country further into inflation.
Despite his critique, Adams has previously expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration, which he views as a new chapter for Nigeria.
His support was reiterated in a congratulatory letter to President Tinubu following his recent victory at the Supreme Court.
Adams emphasized, “Nigeria is going through a lot at the moment,” and expressed hope that Tinubu’s leadership will meet the demands of these challenging times.
Adams urged the President to address the urgent needs of the nation, particularly calling for a restructuring of the country to better meet the needs of its citizens.

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) and the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) have announced that they would soon embark on a joint inspection of supermarkets, grocery stores and other trading outlets in Lagos.
The Commission stated that this was to ensure conformity with the consumer rights law.
According to a statement on Thursday, this was revealed during a recent visit by LASCOPA’s General Manager to the FCCPC headquarters in Abuja.
The acting Executive Vice Chairman of the FCCPC, Dr. Adamu Abdullahi, while welcoming the GM of LASCOPA, Afolabi Solebo, highlighted the necessity of collaboration to effectively safeguard the interests of consumers, particularly in the face of emerging challenges such as price gouging and other misleading practices being perpetrated on consumers.
He noted that Lagos, being the country’s bustling economic hub with a lot of industry and service providers, must feel the impact and presence of the commission.
“We have therefore agreed and planned that in the coming week, we will be coming to Lagos to have a joint enforcement, especially on issues of falsehood, misconception, and misleading practices in the formal and informal sectors of the economy,” Abdullahi said.
In his remarks, Solebo reiterated the commitment of both agencies to fully enforce consumer protection laws.
The planned joint enforcement operations in Lagos, according to Solebo, is a proactive approach to tackling issues like non-display of product prices and ensuring fair refund policies, among other consumer rights-related issues.
He noted that LASCOPA had been at the forefront of securing compensations for aggrieved consumers through the cooperation of the judiciary, saying that the successes recorded by the agency underscored the effectiveness of collaborative efforts in upholding consumer rights.

The Federal Government (FG) has stated that the bribery against unidentified Nigerian government officials by Binance Chief Executive Officer Richard Teng is diversionary.
The Minister of of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji-Mohammed Idris made this known in a statement issued by his media aide, Mr Rabiu Ibrahim on Wednesday in Abuja.
Recall that on Tuesday Teng alleged that Nigerian authorities demanded the sum of $150million in cryptocurrency as a bribe to make the money laundering trial initiated against two of its executives, Tigran Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla, go away.
Gambaryan, a U.S. citizen and head of financial crime and Anjarwalla, a British Kenyan, are currently facing trial for laundering more than $35 million in Nigeria.
Reacting to the allegations levelled against the government, Ibrahim said the claim is part of an orchestrated international campaign by Binance to undermine the Nigerian government.
“The Organisation made false allegations of bribery against unidentified Nigerian Government officials, who it claimed, demanded 150 million dollar in cryptocurrency payments to resolve the ongoing criminal investigation against the company.
“This claim by Binance lacks any iota of substance. It is nothing but a diversionary tactic and an attempted act of blackmail by a company desperate to obfuscate the grievous criminal charges it is facing in Nigeria.
“While this lawful investigation was going on, an executive of Binance, who was in court-sanctioned protective custody, escaped from Nigeria, and he is now a fugitive from the law.
“Working with the security agencies in Nigeria, Interpol is currently executing an international arrest warrant on the said fugitive.
“The phantom bribe claim is part of an orchestrated international campaign by this company that is facing criminal prosecution in many countries including the United States, to undermine the Nigerian Government,” Idris said.
The Minister recalled that, a week back, the founder and former CEO of Binance, Changpeng Zhao, was sentenced to prison in the United States, after pleading guilty to charges very similar to what Binance was being investigated for in Nigeria.
He added that Zhao agreed to pay a fine of 50 million dollar, while Binance is liable for 4.3 billion dollar in fines and forfeitures to the US Government.
“We would like to remind Binance that it will not clear its name in Nigeria by resorting to fictional claims and mudslinging media campaigns.
“The only way to resolve its issues will be by submitting itself to unobstructed investigation and judicial due process.
“The Federal Government will continue to act within its laws and international norms, and will not succumb to any form of blackmail from any entity, local or foreign,” Idris stressed.

Speaking in a video message shared via his Instagram account, Kuti said, “When Fela was the top musician in Nigeria, we were living with about 500 people in our house. All the money I was meant to inherit, Fela used it to cater for people.
“Everyone in Kalakuta was receiving daily allowance and weekly salaries. Both Kalakuta and [African] shrine. Almost 1000 people. They were artisans… We had all the professions in Kalakuta.
“My pocket money in 1990, throughout my primary school was N100 per day. My pocket money a day was bigger than my teacher’s salary.”

ECL: Why Olympiakos knocked us out – Aston Villa coach, Unai Emery
Aston Villa manager, Unai Emery, has explained why his team were beaten 2-0 against Olympiakos in the second leg of their Europa Conference League, ECL, semi-final on Thursday.
Aston Villa’s Europa Conference League run ended at the semi-final stage, as opponents, Olympiakos set up a final with Fiorentina.
Having lost the first leg 4-2, Aston Villa fell to a 2-0 defeat in Greece to lose their tie 6-2 on aggregate.
Ayoub El Kaabi, who scored a hat-trick in the first leg, scored the two goals for the host.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Emery said his team controlled the game, but were not clinical.
“We got to be in Europe at the end of last season and this year we enjoyed it, but to win is very difficult and we are in the process [of developing],” Emery said.
“They [Olympiakos] deserve to be in the final. We lost it in the first 90 minutes at home and we were not competitive. We started this first half well, they scored but we controlled the game, but we were not clinical.
“This is an experience for us at Aston Villa after a long time [of not being in Europe] and again we are going to compete in Europe next year.
“Of course we are a little bit disappointed, a little bit frustrated but we have to move on quickly. We started the first leg and maybe we were favourites but after the first leg, we weren’t.”

Transfer: ‘They’re pushing, he’s top priority’ – Romano names player Arsenal want to sign
Football transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Arsenal want to sign Ajax centre-back, Jorrel Hato.
According to Romano, Hato is one of their top targets for the summer transfer window.
Hato, 18, made his debut for Ajax last season but quickly established himself as a first-team regular at the start of the current campaign.
His contract with Ajax will expire in 2028, but Arsenal are ‘pushing’ to sign the player this summer and are already preparing a move.
“Hato signed a new deal with Ajax a few months ago, Ajax are obviously more than happy with him and hoping to keep Hato at the club in the summer,” Romano said on the Here We Go podcast.
“But Arsenal are still following him, they’ve tracked him multiple times, they believe he is a top, top centre back in terms of potential, so keep an eye on Arsenal. They are still pushing on Hato and they believe they are frontrunners in the race to sign him.
“Let’s see if they can make it happen this summer, or it has to be in the future, but Hato remains one of the priority names on Arsenal’s list,” he added.
Transfer: It’s right path to follow – Transfer guru opens up on Osimhen’s next move
Transfer market expert, Luca Marchetti has brought to bear some important details about the future of Nigeria international, Victor Osimhen.
Osimhen and Napoli have decided to part ways at the end of the current campaign and the player has been linked with possible moves to Arsenal, Chelsea and PSG.
Napoli have included a release clause of 130 million euros into the Nigerian’s contract.
Reports in Italy say that Romelu Lukaku would be used as a makeweight in any proposed deal taking Osimhen to Chelsea in the summer.
Lukaku has spent a back to back at Inter Milan and AS Roma, so Chelsea are looking to get him off their books permanently.
Marchetti said that Napoli want Chelsea to include Lukaku as a makeweight in the deal for Osimhen.
Marchetti was quoted as saying by Spazio Napoli: “It is a path to follow, because we need to create a market around Osimhen: it is an operation that Napoli must do. PSG was busy with the Champions League yesterday, there are no contacts yet.
“It is right that Napoli finds alternative paths so as not to be grabbed by the throat by the potential buyer, thanks to the Nigerian’s desire to leave.
“However, Lukaku is not a clue to Conte’s possible arrival, just as he was not a clue for Roma last season.
“Dovbyk, Gyökeres, David are excellent players, it remains to be seen whether they will remain competitive even in a different country and a different way of playing as Italian football predicts.”
You can’t find another him in Europe, he’s irreplaceable – Italy legend hails Super Eagles striker
Former Italy international, Giuseppe Galderisi, has said that Napoli might struggle to replace Victor Osimhen.
The 25-year-old is set to leave the Armando Maradona Stadium at the end of the season.
Osimhen played a pivotal role in Napoli Serie A victory last season, scoring 26 goals.
His consistency has attracted the attention of European giants like Arsenal, Chelsea and PSG, at some point, Manchester United and Real Madrid.
Names like Romelu Lukaku, Joshua Zirkzee, Viktor Gyokeres, and Jonathan David have been mentioned as possible replacements for the Nigeria international.
Galderisi believes that the player’s skillset could be difficult for the Serie A champions to find elsewhere.
“Scamacca is doing extraordinary things this year, but he is different from Osimhen. All you have to do is serve him and he scores goals,” Galderisi remarked, according to Calcio Napoli.
“The European Championship will be fundamental for him to understand how much of an impact he can have in certain competitions.
“But replacing Osimhen with Scamacca is a big risk. Osimhen” He moves with ease, he always makes the right movement and when he starts again he becomes uncatchable.
“I would have rewarded his gesture on the occasion of the second goal in Udine, I would have given him the goal. You can’t find another Osimhen in Europe, then we need to understand what Napoli wants to do.”
