Employing people to State’s civil service isn’t my priority – Governor O

The governor stated that the issue of employment would arise when the government finished dealing with what it met in the civil service.

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti

The governor made this known during the monthly interactive session with the media on Thursday in Umuahia. He said that the issue of employment would arise when the government finished dealing with what it met in the civil service.

According to him, there is an embargo that I made and that embargo is still in place. He complained that the number of persons in the civil service was still very high even after verification.

Otti decried the huge wage bill of about four billion naira for both local government and state on a monthly basis. The governor, however, assured that the government was working assiduously on improving and enhancing the pay for the civil servants.

He said that government was aware that there were quite a lot of people in the service who might not be contributing at optimal levels and would need to do something about it.

He said: “So, it may not be a priority at this time to open up the doors to bring in new people, except if we have a way of exiting a few people.

“But you know with the civil service rules, it is not going to be very easy to exit people.

“What we are trying to do with the establishment of the Civil Service Commission and resumption of the new Head of Service and new Permanent Secretaries is to ensure that our people are adequately trained.

“This is to enable them operate their skills and perform better.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the governor spoke on a range of issues concerning his developmental stride in areas of infrastructure, agriculture, education, health and others.

Why women are being pitted against each other in music industry – Simi

Nigerian singer, Simisola Kosoko, aka Simi, has explained that relationships between female artists are not so cordial because they are often pitted against each other.

In a recent interview with Angela Yee, the ‘Men Are Crazy’ crooner admitted that fans pitting female artists against each other put pressure on their relationship.

Simi said, “Fans pit women against each other in the music industry. It’s so intense sometimes. Sometimes it can be really distracting because there are not as many of us in the [music] industry compared to the guys.

“When a new female artist breaks into the industry, they [fans] just pit her against us with all forms of comparisons.

“We can all thrive. I have spoken about women several times even in my songs. But because I’m an artist people assume that the only way my talking about women can be valid is by featuring women in my songs. It’s just so weird because there are women in different walks of life.

“They do pit us against each other a lot and I think sometimes that puts some pressure on the kind of relationship that we would have otherwise.”

‘Statistic says 80% of gymgoers are career sex workers’ – Actress Lolo1

Nollywood actress and media personality, Omotunde Adebowale David, popularly known as Lolo1, says recent data indicated that 80 per cent of gymgoers are professional sex workers.

She stated this on the latest episode of the ‘Say My Piece’ podcast.

“Stats say that 80% of the people that come to the gym now are career prostitutes,” Lolo said.

Her guest on the show, former Big Brother Naija housemate and fitness trainer, Kemen, faulted the statistics, saying those behind the stats were generalising their experiences.

He said, “Whoever is behind that stat is one of the career prostitutes that was just successful in trying to prostitute in the gym.

“We make commercial sex work look like it’s very easy. If commercial sex work was as easy or profitable as a lot of people think it is, an average girl would most likely… Who wants to suffer?

“Even as a man, if sleeping with girls was the easy thing to do… For anybody that has had their life and health changed in the gym, will never say this thing [that gymgoers are prostitutes].”

According to the fitness trainer, he has never made any sexual advances towards any of his clients throughout his career.

“In my 10 years of being a personal trainer, if you have been my client or know anyone that has been my client that I have had any sexual relationship with, drop your receipts [evidence],” he bragged.

Nigerians who take hard drugs can go to prison for 15 yrs if Tinubu signs new law

The bill also prescribed not more than 15 years imprisonment without the option of a fine, for conviction on the consumption of hard drugs and substances.

Nigerian youths taking hard drugs [The Guardian Nigeria]

This followed the passage of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Amendment Bill 2024. It also prescribed not more than 15 years imprisonment without the option of a fine, for conviction on the consumption of hard drugs and substances.

This followed the adoption of the report of Senate Committees on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters and Drugs and Narcotics on the NDLEA Amendment Act at plenary.

The report was presented by the Chairman of the committee, Sen. Mohammed Monguno (APC -Borno). Monguno in his presentation said the amendment sought to strengthen the operations of the NDLEA, empower its operations to establish laboratories for forensic review and update the list of dangerous drugs.

He said the amendment was also designed to review penalties and enhance the powers of the NDLEA to prosecute drug-related offences and issue subsidiary legislation. He said the Senate had on February 28, deliberated on the bill, which was transmitted from the House of Representatives for the Senate’s concurrence.

He said it was important to make a general comment on the bill, especially on the classification of the offences and penalty categorisations of drug-related offences. He said the categorisations were peculiar and different from other laws because of the sentencing guideline used in the determination of drug-related offences.

These guidelines in drug laws are designed to promote fairness, consistency and proportionality in the criminal justice system while considering the broader goals of rehabilitation and public safety.

“It is also important to note that several variables are used in determining the penalties imposed on a suspect.

“This includes type and quantity of controlled substance, defendant’s criminal history, intent behind drug-related activities, aggravating or mitigating circumstance such as organised crime, violence, use of offensive weapon.

“Others like endangerment of minors can aggravate penalties, conversely mitigating factors like cooperation with law enforcement or lack of prior criminal record may lessen the severity of punishment.”

Earlier, before the passage of the bill during clause-by-clause consideration, Sen. Ali Ndume (APC Borno), had moved a motion for amendment to clause 11 of the bill, which initially prescribed life imprisonment for drugs and substances trafficking in Nigeria. Ndume had called for stiffer sanctions and moved a motion for a prescribing death sentence.

The motion was seconded by Sen. Onyekachi Nwaebonyi (APC-Ebonyi), who said that drugs and substance trafficking were doing great harm to the nation and hence, stiffer penalties should be given to offenders.

When the voice vote for the adoption of the motion on the death penalty was put to vote, the “Yes” had their way as the Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jubrin (APC- Kano), who was presiding ruled in favour of the “Yes.”

However, the decision did not go well for Sen. Adams Oshiomhole (APC – Edo), who objected to the ruling, saying that he was responsible to his constituents for every law passed in the Senate. He said issues of life and death should not be passed based on a “Yes or No” response, advocating for a voting by every senator.

Responding, Barau said the best approach for the Edo lawmaker was to have called for a division immediately after the clause on the death sentence was adopted. Barau said the decision to rule in favour of the “yes” was not the making of the presiding officer but on the voice vote of members.

‘Your husband is your head, not your partner’ – Daddy Freeze tells Nigerian women

Controversial media personality, Ifedayo Olarinde, aka Daddy Freeze, has urged Nigerian women to regard their husbands as their “heads” and not their partners.

According to Daddy Freeze, both African, Middle Eastern, Christian and Islamic traditions regard the husband as the head of the family and not as a partner like in the Western world.

Speaking in a video message shared via his Instagram account, the OAP said, “Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, Fulani, and Efik traditions as well as Christian and Islamic traditions, all say the man is the head of the house. In the Western world, your husband is your partner.

“Your husband is not supposed to be your partner, he is your head.”

He, however, advised women to be careful who them “submit your headship to.”

Court dismisses 13-year malicious prosecution case against NCC

Court dismisses 13-year malicious prosecution case against NCC

The case was filed by a movie producer, Charles Ayiga, who alleged that NCC maliciously prosecuted him for offences he did not commit.

Specifically, he said the commission maliciously prosecuted him for a purported obstruction of its officer in the course of carrying out his official duties and unlawful possession of Federal Government documents.

Ayiga who filed the case after he had been discharged and acquitted of the charges brought against him by NCC, sought ₦200 million general damages for being subjected to the rigours of criminal trial, for over three years, without reasonable justification.

The plaintiff also sought another ₦300 million, in damages for the loss he claimed he had suffered from his business as a result of the malicious prosecution embarked upon by the defendant.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the case, with a checkered history, commenced in 2011, and was heard by no fewer than five different judges, two of whom had died before a judgment was delivered by Justice Olukayode Adeniyi.

The two Judges, of blessed memory, who had entertained the case were the late Justice Adamu Abdu-Kafarati a former Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, and late Justice Jude Okeke of the FCT High Court.

Delivering his judgment, Justice Adeniyi held that the offences for which Ayika was charged, tried and acquitted were known to law. He said, though, the plaintiff was discharged and acquitted of the charges in question, but he failed to provide credible evidence to establish the liability of the Commission for a tort of malicious prosecution.

The court also held that, by the provisions of section 38(4) of the NCC Act, the Defendant was lawfully authorised to apprehend the plaintiff and charge him to court.

“I fail to see how the Defendant’s prosecution of the Claimant for the offence of obstructing a Copyright Officer in the performance of his statutory duties was actuated by malice or driven by vindictiveness or malevolence,” he held.

On the damages claimed by Ayika, the court described it as a “phantom project, deliberately crafted by the Claimant to reap where he did not sow”.

NAN reports that the case commenced in 2011, when Ayika wrote a petition to the NCC alleging that a television station with the name, MYTV, had, without his consent, broadcast his movie titled, “Arrows of Love”.

The Commission investigated the petition and concluded that there was no prima facie case of criminal copyright infringement. Hence, he was advised to seek redress by way of a civil suit against the suspect.

Unsatisfied with the decision of the Commission, Ayika petitioned the Presidency as well as the Minister of Justice/Attorney General of the Federation who directed the Commission to re-investigate the matter.

On the strength of the ministerial directives, the Commission assigned a new Copyright Inspector, Caleb Daniel, to re-investigate the petition. In the course of debriefing the petitioners, the NCC Inspector, Daniel, had alleged that Ayika became violent and assaulted him.

Specifically, Daniel had said that Ayika became violent when confronted with the question of how he obtained official documents from the Commission which he attached to his petition. Ayika was subsequently detained for the offence of obstruction and thereafter granted administrative bail.

Consequently, Ayika instituted a Fundamental Rights action against the Commission while the Commission filed a charge against him for obstructing a Copyright Inspector in the course of carrying out his official duties under Section 38(4) of the Copyright Act, Cap C28, Laws of the Federation, 2004.

After hearing the arguments of the parties, the court dismissed the Fundamental Rights matter on the ground that the action was premature because of the pending criminal matter against Ayika.

Meanwhile, the obstruction charge went on. After proceedings, the Claimant, Ayika was discharged and acquitted. Subsequently, Ayika filed a suit against the Commission for malicious prosecution at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

The court presided over late Justice Abdu-Kafarati declined jurisdiction to hear the suit on the ground that the action was founded on the tort of malicious prosecution and transferred it to the FCT High Court.

The matter upon being transferred to the High Court of the FCT, went to full trial under late Justice Jude Okeke. Okeke had reserved judgment in the suit but sadly passed on before the reserved date.

The case was then re-assigned to Justice Adeniyi before whom the matter started de novo (afresh).

Three Super Eagles of Nigeria players will be on parade during the 2023-2024 UEFA Europa League final at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on May 22, 2024.

For the first time in the history of the tournament, three Nigeria players – Victor Boniface, Ademola Lookman, and Nathan Tella will battle for the Europa League title.

The last Nigerian player to win the European second-tier title was Samuel Chukwueze. The AC Milan winger won the title in 2021 while he was playing for Villarreal.

Spartak Moscow forward, Victor Moses is the only Nigerian player to win the Europa League twice, in 2012/13 and 2018/19 with Chelsea.

Super Eagles legend, Mikel Obi has won the European title once (2012-2013) while playing for Chelsea.

Victor Boniface, Ademola Lookman, and Nathan Tella reached the final of the Europa League on Thursday, May 9. Boniface and Lookman helped unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen to make it to the final.

After beating Roma 2-0 in Rome, Bayer Leverkusen who have not suffered a defeat in all competitions finished the job in Germany by drawing 2-2 in the return leg. Hence, they scaled through 4-2 on aggregate.

As for Ademola Lookman, he helped Atalanta to scale through Marseille after drawing 1-1 in the first leg and winning 3-0 in the second leg.

This means that at least one Nigerian player will win the Europa League at the end of this season.

Kano Electric Official Found Dead After Phone Call From Friend

An employee of Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), Bello Bukar Adamu, has been found dead many hours after his sudden disappearance from home.

Reports are that Adamu was contacted by his friend, Zubairu Sadiq, who is alleged to be a former coworker at KEDCO.

The suspect allegedly lured Adamu out of his home under the guise of a promising job opportunity. On Sunday, May 5, 2024, Adamu was last seen following the phone call from Sadiq regarding the supposed job offer.

The victim’s younger brother, Abdullahi Abubakar, told journalists that Adamu left home promptly after the call, eager for a job at the Federal Inland Revenue Service. Despite his enthusiasm, but never returned home after meeting with the individual who claimed to have the job offer.

“Adamu was desperately looking for a Federal Inland Revenue Service job offer. He was so hopeful. He was working with Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) and wanted to join FIRS and somebody was soliciting the offer for him. When he received a phone call in relation to the job offer, he asked his wife to bring his car key and went to the person waiting for him. Since then, we never heard from him.

“Since he did not return that Sunday, we decided to track his calls. The last word of his conversation with the person on the other end was ‘Alhamdulillah’. From this, we understood that he was lured into believing that the offer was ready-made,” Abubakar narrated.

He mentioned that due to the tragic sequence of events, family members were experiencing intense pain because Bello had trusted Sadiq.

He also revealed that the family had scoured hospitals, police stations, and mortuaries in search of Adamu, but it wasn’t until May 6 that they were notified of a body discovered in Kumbotso local government area of the State, confirmed to be his brother’s corpse.

The deceased’s sibling shared that investigations indicated Sadiq was the last person Adamu had spoken to before his death.

In the meantime, Sadiq has been apprehended by the Kano State Police Command, admitting to his involvement in Bello’s killing.

Nevertheless, the extent of his participation and any potential accomplices are still being looked into.

Naija News understands that the incident has left Adamu’s family grappling with sorrow and disbelief.

Adamu’s remains were laid to rest on May 7, with a significant number of relatives and friends attending the funeral in the Gama B area of Kano, mourning the loss of a respected and beloved community member.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, verified Sadiq’s arrest and mentioned that investigations into the matter were ongoing.

Also, KEDCO spokesperson, Bala Sani, expressed deep sorrow over Adamu’s death, calling him one of the DisCo’s most dedicated employees.

Sani, however, emphasised that while the matter is currently under police investigation, it wasn’t connected to KEDCO’s operations.

“Honestly, the deceased and the suspect had a cordial working relationship, even though the suspect was not our staff at the time of the incident. The cause of death is currently being investigated by the police. But we understood that it is a personal thing between them, not official. The accused is not our staff,” Sani said.

Lagos-Kano Rail Begins Freight Operations In June, Says FG

FG Commences Port Harcourt-Aba Train Service

The Federal Government is set to initiate freight services on the Lagos-Kano narrow gauge rail line, aiming to enhance commercial operations and reduce the burden on the nation’s highways.

Naija News reports that the development was disclosed during an inspection visit by the Minister of Transportation, Saidu Alkali, to the project site in Kano State on Thursday.

During the visit, the contractors, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, confirmed the completion of critical sections of the rail line, including its connection to the Zawaciki Dala Dry Port in Kano, a key commercial hub in the state.

The commencement of freight operations is anticipated to not only extend the lifespan of Nigeria’s highways but also significantly decrease the incidence of auto accident-related fatalities.

Minister Alkali expressed satisfaction with the rapid progress since his last inspection, noting the visible advancements in earthwork, culverts, and rail line preparations.

“The impression I have from the last visit I came is that the progress is remarkable from what I have seen,” Alkali remarked.

He further detailed that his inspection included traveling from Kano on the newly formed track, an indicator of nearing completion stages.

Additionally, the Minister revealed strategic plans to segment the project to ensure its efficient and expedited completion. “We are going to segment the project by the grace of God.

We are planning to put Kano-Daura next year and Daura to Maradi in 2026, and Dutse to Kano in 2026,” he explained.

This segmentation is expected to streamline operations and focus resources effectively across different sections of the rail line.

The inspection also involved a comprehensive review with a team from the Ministry of Transportation, engineers from the Railway Corporation, and consultants, aimed at ensuring compliance with time frames and specifications.

The Lagos-Kano rail line project is part of a broader government initiative to bolster the country’s infrastructure to support economic growth and facilitate easier movement of goods and people across key economic zones.

The addition of freight services is seen as a pivotal step towards enhancing Nigeria’s logistics capabilities and relieving pressure on road transport.

Junta Leader, Idriss Deby Itno Wins Chad Presidential Election

Chad President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno

Chad’s military leader, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, has emerged victorious in this week’s presidential election.

Naija News understands that Deby Itno secured a first-round win based on preliminary official results announced on Thursday evening.

This outcome further solidifies his family’s longstanding control over the Republic of Chad.

It is worth noting that the election held on Monday was a significant step towards ending a period of military governance lasting three years in a country that plays a crucial role in combating extremism in the Sahel region of Africa.

According to the ANGE electoral commission, Deby received 61.03% of the votes, surpassing Prime Minister Succes Masra, who only obtained 18.53%. These results are, however, subject to confirmation by the Constitutional Council.

“I am now the elected president of all Chadians,” Deby declared in a brief televised address on Thursday, promising to fulfil his “commitments.”

Naija News understands that Masra had previously declared triumph and cautioned that Deby’s team would manipulate the outcome.

Upon the announcement of the results, soldiers in the N’Djamena neighbourhood where Masra’s party is headquartered fired their weapons into the sky.

According to AFP, this act served as both a celebration of Deby’s victory and a deterrent to potential protesters. In response, some frightened individuals sought refuge or hurried back to their homes, causing the streets of the capital to become deserted quickly.

Meanwhile, near the presidential palace in central N’Djamena, Deby’s supporters expressed their jubilation by shouting, singing, honking car horns, and firing their own guns into the air, as witnessed by AFP reporters.

Regrettably, at least two teenagers reportedly sustained injuries from falling bullets.

Naija News reports that Otti made this remark during the monthly media interaction session held on Thursday in Umuahia, the state’s capital city.

Governor Otti mentioned that the issue of recruitment would be considered after addressing existing challenges within the civil service.

He reiterated the existence of an employment embargo that he had implemented, which remains in effect. Despite the verification process, Otti expressed concern over the high number of individuals in the civil service.

Otti also highlighted the significant monthly wage bill of approximately four billion naira for both the local government and the state. Nevertheless, the governor reassured that efforts were being made to enhance the remuneration of civil servants.
