NCDC confirms 857 lassa fever cases, 156 deaths in Nigeria

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC has confirmed 857 cases of Lassa fever and 156 deaths across 28 states from January to April 28.

The centre, via its official website, disclosed this in a published report on the Lassa fever situation in the country.

The report noted that the case fatality rate (CFR) stands at 18.2 per cent, a status that is higher than the 2023 rate of 17.0 per cent within the same period under review.

NAN reports that Lassa fever is an acute and potentially fatal viral haemorrhagic disease, endemic in many West African countries.

It is caused by the Lassa virus and transmitted primarily through contact with food, household items contaminated by the urine or excreta of the mastomys natalensis rat species and through contact with the body fluids of infected individuals, particularly among caregivers.

In Nigeria, Lassa fever is characterised by yearly outbreaks that occur typically during the dry season.

“The report for week 17, covering April 22 to 28 highlighted a worrisome increase in confirmed cases from 11 to 14, compared to the previous week.

“Notably, 63 per cent of confirmed cases in 2024 was concentrated in Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi states, while the remaining 37 per cent was reported from 25 states,” it said.

The centre said that even with the efforts being made to combat the outbreak of the disease, challenges have persisted, including late presentation of cases, poor health-seeking behaviour and the cost of treatment thus contributing to the high CFR.

According to NCDC, bad environmental sanitation and low awareness in high-burden communities have worsened the situation.

NCDC said the National Lassa fever multi-partner, multi-sectoral Incident Management System had been activated to coordinate a comprehensive response at all levels.

It said the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) had begun mobilising resources to address the escalating crisis.

It added that while no health workers were affected during the reporting week, the predominant age group affected by the disease remains 21-30 years old.

The centre emphasised the importance of early detection, good hygiene, and community awareness, to mitigate the spread of the disease and prevent further fatalities.

NCDC said concerted efforts from government agencies, healthcare providers, and the public were crucial to containing the outbreak of the disease and saving lives.

The centre emphasised that the prevention of Lassa fever involves avoiding contact with rodents and their droppings, practising good personal hygiene, and taking precautions when caring for infected persons.

It said early diagnosis and prompt medical care were crucial to managing the disease and preventing complications.

EPL: Carragher identifies two Manchester United signings as spectacular failures.

Renowned Liverpool figure, Jamie Carragher has voiced sharp criticism towards Erik ten Hag’s player choices at Manchester United.

Following a promising inaugural season under Ten Hag’s leadership, the Red Devils have faltered this campaign, currently occupying an uncharacteristic eighth position in the league standings.

Manchester United’s woes hit a nadir in a recent clash against Crystal Palace, suffering a resounding 4-0 defeat under the helm of Oliver Glasner.

This humbling loss has intensified scrutiny on ten Hag, with Carragher questioning the Dutchman’s player selection acumen, particularly in the transfer market.

Carragher, in an assessment mirrored by Metro, remarked, “Like Arteta, Ten Hag had no choice but to use the personnel available to be more pragmatic in his first season. Over his first three transfer windows, United spent just over £380 million and nothing has changed as they have bought more deadwood than they have sold. Of Ten Hag’s first Premier League line-up (defeat by Brighton in August, 2022), seven would probably still make the first choice “Only two have left the club, and another, Jadon Sancho, is about to play the Champions League final on loan at Borussia Dortmund. Unlike Arteta’s transfer picks, Ten Hag’s decisions backfired terribly, especially the signings of Antony and Casemiro

Ovoke’s death an act of God – Family, Brickhall school speaks after burial.

The family of the four-year-old pupil of Brickhall school in Abuja, Miguel Ovoke on Friday described the death of their child as “an act of God.”

This comes amid the investigation into Ovoke’s death by the House of Representatives.

The House of Representatives had constituted a special Ad-hoc Committee to investigate the circumstances leading to Ovoke’s untimely death within four weeks.

Controversy broke out on April 24, 2024, when Ovoke choked on a piece of meat.

He was reportedly rushed to the Excel Specialist Hospital after choking on a piece of meat during lunch at school.

The hospital declared him dead on arrival despite efforts of the medical team to resuscitate him.

But, the mother of Ovoke alleged that her son was killed, a situation that led to protests.

However, the intervention of human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju quelled the situation as the family and school management came to a settlement.

In a joint press conference in Abuja, shortly after Ovoke was buried at the Gudu Cemetery, the family of the deceased and school management described the death as an unfortunate situation.

Speaking in the company of Ovoke’s family and Brickhall school management, Adeyanju said: “Both the family and school management pledged to preserve the memory of the late four-year-old.

“To preserve the memory of our son, Miguel Ovoke, the family will set up an educational foundation that will provide scholarships for indigent students in honour of Miguel. Brickhall School has decided to immortalize Miguel Ovoke by naming the early year’s Resource Room at Brickhall School in memory of Ovoke.

“Brickhall School will support the Miguel Ovoke Foundation by granting scholarships to selected underprivileged children in memory of Ovoke.

“Brickhall School reaffirms their commitment to providing an excellent and child-friendly learning environment for all of their students and the Ovoke family acknowledges the positive steps taken by Brickhall School to address this regrettable incident.”

UK exits recession as economy bounces back

The United Kingdom’s economy has overcome recession earlier than expected in the first quarter of 2023.

The economy grew by 0.6 per cent between January and March, the fastest rate for two years, official figures showed.

Recall that last year, the UK economy slipped into recession after shrinking for two three-month periods in a row.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the economy had “turned a corner”, but Labour said this was no time for a “victory lap”.

On Thursday, the governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, told the BBC that the UK was seeing a recovery, although it was not a strong one.

Interest rates have been at their highest for 16 years, meaning people are paying more to borrow money for things such as mortgages and loans, but savers have also received better returns.

The Bank on Thursday said that inflation, which measures the rate of prices rise, would fall close to its target level in the next couple of months. That had boosted expectations of a rate cut in June. However, the growth figures that were stronger than expected dampened those expectations.

Kidnappers kill 6-year-old boy after collecting feeding fee, insisting on ransom.

Two men in Adamawa State who were arrested for kidnapping and killing a boy and going ahead to insist on ransom, have confessed to the crime.

The Adamawa State Police, which disclosed this on Friday, added that the suspects had been quick in collecting what they called feeding fees from the parents of their victim while they waited for ransom to be paid.

The command, in the statement signed by police image maker, Suleiman Nguroje, said on the 5th of May, 08/05/2024, it received a report from Edwin Eze, a resident of Tudun Wada in Ganye LGA, that on the same date, about 1:00am kidnappers invaded his home and took away his 6-year-old son, Eboka Edwin.

The Command, quoting Edwin Eze, said the kidnappers later called via GSM and demanded N10 million as ransom, and that the suspects equally demanded and received N152,000 for the victim’s feeding.

On the strength of that, the Commissioner of Police, Adamawa State Command, CP Dankombo Morris, raised detectives led by SP Mohammed Yahaya Nuhu, Divisional Police officer (DPO) Ganye to rescue the victim,” the Command stated.

The Command added that the team swung into action and arrested two suspects: Muktar Mohammed, aged 20 years, and Hussein Suleiman, also aged 20 years, both residents of Bashin Village, Yoro Local Government Area of Taraba State.

According to the Command, “During preliminary investigations, the suspects confessed that they conspired and jointly kidnapped the victim to a forest lying across the border between Nigeria and the Cameroon Republic.

“They added that they killed the victim by inflicting severe injuries on him using a knife, after which he bled until he became dead. Thereafter, they buried the corpse in a shallow grave and kept demanding ransom, until their arrest.”

Three phones were recovered from the victims.

The Command said while the state police commissioner commiserates with the bereaved family on the unfortunate incident, he reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to combating all forms of crime.
