Ahead of the forthcoming council and Councillorship elections, youths of the Ezza North local government Area of Ebonyi state have vowed to retire old and selfish politicians to pave the way for the younger generations.

The Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission, EBSIEC, had fixed July 20th,2024 for the conduct of Local government Election in the state.

They lamented that the old politicians were responsible for bad governance in Ezza North local government, stressing that they would do everything humanly possible not to elect such persons to be at the helm of affairs in the local government area election.

They made their position known during their visit to the state Commissioner for Environment, Victor Chukwu to prevail on him to vie for the local government election.

The youths who were led by their National President, Emeka Nwokporo and Publicity Secretary, Polycarp Obinna Alegu, lamented that Ezza North local government Area has always been disadvantaged and afflicted with leadership malady which they said was why it is the most underdeveloped in the state without any meaningful project for people.

“The good works of the state governor, His Excellency, Rt Hon Bldr Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru which is anchored on the “people’s charter of needs” should be replicated at the grassroots and at Ezza North in particular to ensure even development in the state.

“We have had leadership failure in the council steered by old politicians and we can’t risk having an old person again as our council boss. We need youth with vision to lead the council for the good of the people.

PDP boycotting Yobe LG poll over fear of defeat – Gov Buni’s Aide

The decision of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Yobe State to boycott the state’s 25th May, 2024 local government election is nothing but for the fear of defeat.

Senior Special Assistant to Governor Buni on Digital and Strategic Communications, Yusuf Ali mocked the opposition party in a statement issued to newsmen.

He claimed that “It is a known fact that the opposition PDP in Yobe has nothing to offer to the people and has foreseen its impending defeat in the upcoming local government poll, and in its usual characteristics, resorted to blackmail.

“The truth of the matter is that PDP cannot win any post in the local government election even if APC members do not participate in it, because the people will still reject them at the polls.

“Instead of them to embark on rigorous grassroots campaigns to redeem their dented and battered image, they are dishing out unfounded allegations on the State Independent Electoral Commission that has done everything possible to conduct free, fair and credible polls.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission, YBSIEC, has adequately informed political parties in the state about the upcoming election activities schedules” he said.

Steer clear, perish thoughts of forcefully taking over Rivers State – PDP warns APC

0

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has warned the All Progressives Congress, APC, to steer clear of Rivers State, saying the party should perish thoughts of forcefully taking over the state.

This is even as the PDP claimed that the recent statement by the APC on the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State has further exposed its hallucinating and manipulative plots to force itself into government in the state against the will of the people.

PDP spoke in a statement by Debo Ologunagba, its National Publicity Secretary, on Saturday.

Ologunagba said APC laboured without success to subvert the Constitution on the vacation of seats by former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who, according to him, have lost their membership of the legislative house upon defection from the party.

He said it was pathetic for the APC to think that the facts and true import of Section 109 (1) (g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) to the effect that the former lawmakers have since lost their seats can be muddled and lost in litigations and lengthy press statements.

Ologunagba further stated that the former House members for reasons best known to them, wittingly vacated and summarily lost their seats, insisting that nothing protects or allows them to retain their membership of the House after decamping to another political party.

According to him, the APC should come to terms with the vacation of seats by the former lawmakers.

The statement partly read: “It is indeed pathetic for the APC to think that the facts and true import of Section 109 (1) (g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) to the effect that the former lawmakers have since lost their seats can be muddled and lost in litigations and lengthy press statements.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Section 109 (1)(g) of the Constitution is clear in providing that “a member of a House of Assembly shall vacate his seat in the House if – being a person whose election to the House of Assembly was sponsored by a political party, he becomes a member of another political party before expiration of the period for which that House was elected.

“Provided that his membership of the latter political party is not as a result of a division in the political party of which he was previously a member or of a merger of two or more political parties or factions by one of which he was previously sponsored.”

“The former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, for reasons best known to them, wittingly vacated and summarily lost their seats as nothing in the proviso protects or allows them to retain their membership of the Rivers State House of Assembly after decamping from the political party upon which they were elected.

“These former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have only themselves to blame for Constitutionally vacating their seats; a course which cannot be reversed or remedied. They should admit their miscalculation and bear the inescapable consequences.

“For the umpteenth time the PDP cautions the APC to steer clear of Rivers State; it should perish the thoughts of forcefully taking over the State and stop exasperating the public space by seeking to reverse the irreversible.

“The APC should come to terms that with the vacation of seats by the former lawmakers, the quorum of the Rivers State House of Assembly will be determined by the number of the remaining lawmakers as provided by law; until a bye-election is conducted to fill the vacancies now existing in the Rivers State House of Assembly as a result of the defection by the former members.”

Matawalle: Zamfara APC youths tackle Rep, Jaji, over alleged rented crowd

Youths of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Zamfara State has lambasted the House of Representatives member representing Birnin Magaji/Kaura Namoda Federal Constituency, Aminu Sani Jaji, who recently countered their position about a hired crowd that protested at the premises of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Youths of the opposition party in Zamfara had accused the lawmaker of renting the crowd that protested against the failure of the anti-graft agency to arrest and prosecute former Governor Bello Matawalle just as it is following up with ex-Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.

However, the governor came out publicly to deny his involvement in renting the youths who protested at the EFCC headquarters Abuja.

The Zamfara APC youths, in a statement signed by Abubakar Ibrahim Gusau, said that Aminu Jaji, who ought to be in the National Assembly making laws for good governance that will provide dividends of democracy to the suffering masses, laboured in vain claiming that he knew nothing about the protest.

“Jaji’s politics of bitterness and fear leaves nobody in doubt that he might have a hand in it in collusion with Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State.

“It is all about 2027 elections and the [plot] to jeopardise APC’s chance of reclaiming Zamfara State and reelection of President Bola Tinubu.

“It is obvious that once elections are over, it is time for nation building and delivery of democracy dividends to the people in tandem with the provision of Section 14(2)b of the 1999 Constitution which states that the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.

“We urge politicians to close ranks in national interest. Nigerians are watching as power resides in the people!.”

Ahead of the September 21 governorship election in Edo State, the state leadership of the Labour Party has unveiled its governorship campaign council.

DAILY POST reports that the state chairman of the party, Kelly Ogbaloi unveiled the campaign council members while addressing newsmen after a stakeholders meeting of the State Working Committee with senatorial, local government leaders and executives across the 18 local government areas of the state.

The meeting which was held at the party’s secretariat in Benin City was also attended by Barrister Olumide Akpata and Prince Yusuf Asamah Kadiri, the party’s governorship candidate and running mate, respectively.

Ogbaloi said members of the campaign council would be inaugurated on Monday, May 13, 2024.

He said the campaign council would be led by Reverend Sam Omede as the Director-General, with Dr Ehikioya Agboga as Deputy Director as well as deputy director general for Edo central senatorial district.

Other members of the council are Senator Ned Imasuen, representing Edo South senatorial district in the Senate, Hon Esosa Iyawe and Hon Murphy Osaro Omoruyi, representing Oredo and Egor/Ikpoba Okha federal constituencies, respectively, in the National Assembly.

“In preparation for the upcoming election, we have meticulously selected individuals of impeccable character to lead the State Campaign Council and local government campaign committees,” he said.

The state Labour Party chairman, who condemned the alleged invasion of the secretariat last Thursday by the Youth Leader of the party, Ken Omusi, noted that he (youth leader) had since been suspended for anti-party activities.

He announced Dan Ero from Oredo Local Government Area as his replacement.

Ogbaloi added that the State Working Committee, in the spirit of brotherhood ahead of the governorship election, has lifted the suspension earlier slammed on some membersm

According to him, a reconciliation committee would be set up by the state executive to make peace with any of the aggrieved members before the election.

He, however, appealed to members of the party to leverage on the forthcoming new voters’ registration exercise to expand the voters base as well as ensure broader participation in the electoral process.

“A robust membership drive shall be launched to attract new members and reconcile with the disenchanted individuals who have legitimate grievances”, he added.

He equally urged all members of the party, as well eligible voters in the state, to rally behind the Labour Party’s governorship candidate, Barrister Olumide Akpata and his running mate, Prince Yusuf Asamah Kadiri, in the election.

EPL: City go top as Arsenal visit United on Sunday

City threw down the gauntlet to Arsenal as they smashed four past Fulham at Craven Cottage to go two points clear at the top of the EPL table

Manchester City went top of the Premier League on Saturday with a 4-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage. Pep Guardiola had said his team had to be perfect until the end of the season to pip Arsenal to the title, a historic fourth consecutive triumph.

Fulham players were reported flying kites at their training on Thursday, as many Arsenal fans feared the Cottagers were already on their summer break, and their fears were justified by the 4-0 thrashing that City handed out to them.

This was their second-biggest loss of the season. Their biggest loss was also to City last September, when they lost 5-1 at the Etihad.

Guardiola started the same 11, apart from Ruben Dias, who replaced Kyle Walker.

Defender Josko Gvardiol was the first name on the score sheet and the Croatian is proving to be a veritable source of goals at the tail end of the season. The left-back has scored four goals in his last five EPL matches.

In the 13th minute, Gvardiol exchanged passes with Kevin de Bruyne and skipped past Issa Diop to score with a well-placed right-footed shot.

Nathan Ake had to come off in the 22nd and Walker came on. Phil Foden’s weak effort dribbled over the line for City’s second in the 59th minute and Gvardiol grabbed his brace in the 71st minute when he got on the end of a floated lob from Bernardo Silva.

Substitute Julián Álvarez completed the scoring in the sixth minute of added time, scoring from the penalty spot.

Issa Diop’s second yellow card was for a lunge on Alvarez, and the Fulham man had to go. There ensued an interesting discussion as Gvradiol pleaded to be allowed to take it as he chased a hat-trick, but he was told he couldn’t. Compare this to the Chelsea drama in the same circumstances some weeks ago.

City enhanced their goals-for column and are now just three goals behind Arsenal but two points ahead as the Gunners travel to Old Trafford on Sunday, hoping to win and continue to put pressure on the Cityzens.

Court fixes May 23 for suit on sack of elected council officials in Benue

Justice P. T. Kwahar of the Benue State High Court, sitting in Makurdi, has fixed May 23, 2024, for the hearing of a suit challenging the unconstitutional sacking of elected local government officials in the state and the subsequent appointment of caretaker committees in violation of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The suit, marked MHC/346/2023, was filed by activist, Sesugh Akume against the Governor of Benue and four others.

Akume alleges that the sacking of elected council chairmen and councillors in the state by Governor Hyacinth Ali’s administration and their replacement with cronies was unconstitutional.

Recall that Akume, suing as a private citizen, dragged Governor Ali, the Attorney-General, the Speaker and House of Assembly, and the Special Adviser, Bureau of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, before the Benue State High Court.

Akume contends that Governor Ali’s action of sacking or indefinitely suspending elected local government officials since June 23, 2023, without justification, has left the local government system rudderless, with no governance in place.

He said the 1999 Constitution recognizes only democratically-elected local government councils as the supreme law of the land, under which every other law bows.

In a statement personally signed by Akume on Saturday, he said the court had fixed May 23 for the preliminary ruling.

“In the same vein, the matter of Sesugh Akume v Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC) (with suit number MHC/449/2024) to compel BSIEC to conduct local government elections ready for the incoming administrations to be sworn in on 29 June when the term of the current officials ends, before the Honourable Mr Justice J M Shishi also in Makurdi, filed since 13 March has been fixed for the same 23 May.

“The reason given in both instances is that the courts are undergoing renovation. It may be noted that courts in Nigeria usually go on vacation for 2 months from some time in July through the whole of August and resume in September.

“In the former case, it is expected that the court will hear (and hopefully grant) our application to put aside proceeding to rule on whether it has the legal authority (jurisdiction) to hear our case, but to adopt or hear all our processes (including our amended originating summons) before it first, as proceeding with the ruling without hearing us would be premature, a miscarriage of justice, as well as a violation of the rules of the court, etc.

“In the latter case, it is expected that the court will hear (and hopefully grant) our application to set aside its usual processes and expeditiously hear and conclude our case to compel BSIEC to conduct local government elections with the winners ready to be sworn in within the next 5 weeks as they normally should.” The statement reads in part.

A former Provost of the College of Education, Gidan Waya, Kaduna State, Prof. Alexander Kure, has observed that it is through the coming together of people of different cultures that Nigeria can become great.

According to him, “African nationalist leaders, for example, understood this and succeeded in bringing about political independence in Africa with people of different cultures fighting for a common goal.”

Speaking in a keynote address at the inauguration of constituted standing committees of the Agbiri-Gure Development Association, in Kaduna on Saturday, he noted that it is only by coming together that the people forget their differences to fight a common enemy and achieve a common goal.

He urged Nigerians to unite towards fighting any individual or group of people that are working contrary to the wishes and aspirations of the larger society in the realisation of peace, unity and development in the country.

Prof. November N. Kuchimala of the Department of Agronomy, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, encouraged the people to remain united in all their dealings irrespective of any differences, towards ensuring peace and unity.

The President of the Agbiri-Gure National Development Association, Arch. Audu N. Y. Garba, urged the committee members to approach their responsibilities with dedication, creativity and a strong sense of purpose, saying that their contributions, no matter how big or small, will have a ripple effect that can bring about meaningful and lasting change in their community.

Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has placed a N10 million bounty on the heads of the killers of two policemen in Enugu State, Friday night, saying the state would go after the culprits with every resource at its disposal to bring the killers to book.

Mbah pledged the reward while briefing newsmen after a State Security Council meeting at the Government House, Enugu, which also had in attendance, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kanayo Uzuegbu; State Director, State Security Services, Theresa Egbunu; Garrison Commander, 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, Brigadier General Murtala Abu; and the State Commander, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Peter Ogar, among others.

On the possible culprits, Mbah said available security information pointed to men of the Eastern Security Network, ESN, who came in several SUVs, among them a black Lexus SUV.

He, therefore, called on members of the public to be on the lookout for the criminals and the exhibits and report same to security agencies.

“We just rounded off our Security Council meeting where we discussed, among other things, about the gruesome killing of our policemen – men of the Enugu State Police Command – by criminals suspected to be members of the ESN.

“Let me say this, this bestial and cold-blooded action cannot be condoned in Enugu State. I have given my directives to the security agencies that there must be no hiding place for these criminals in Enugu State.

“We must use everything necessary to hunt down, arrest, and bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous crime.

“We have also placed a bounty of N10 million as a reward to anyone, who would have any useful information that will lead to the arrest of these criminals.

“So, I enjoin members of the public to, please, come forward, or call the police and other security agencies with any useful information that could lead to the arrest of these criminals.

“We do not have room to accommodate these people, these vagabonds, and these miscreants in our state.

“We are going to do everything necessary to ensure that the ultimate sacrifice made by our valiant policemen does not go in vain.

“Our condolences go to the bereaved families. I will also ensure that as government, we are going to provide the necessary support to the bereaved families.

“Let me just also add that those who murder our policemen or indeed any member of our security agencies may assume that they have triumphed in their evil acts. Let me inform them that we are going to come after them with everything we have.

“We are going to deploy all the necessary technology, all the necessary forces within our powers to track them, capture them and defeat them.

“Enugu State and indeed with the support of the security agencies, we are going to make life uncomfortable for those who do not want to live in a decent society,” he stated.

Gateway International Airport to become major transportation hub for S/West – Gbajabiamila

Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, has commended the bold initiative of Governor Dapo Abiodun on the Gateway International Agro Cargo and Passenger Airport, saying that the airport would soon be the transportation hub for other states in the South-West.

Gbajabiamila also applauded the Governor for forging ahead with the airport project even when many of his colleagues failed in their quest to build world class airports in their states.

The Chief of Staff, who stated this during a chat with newsmen at the airport shortly after attending the commissioning of the Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona School of Governance Studies and presentation of a book titled “Reinventing Governance in Nigeria: The Oba (Dr) Sikiru Kayode Adetona Model,” at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, said the airport will revolutionize air transportation in the region and Nigeria as a whole.

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives further gave kudos to Governor Abiodun for believing in the airport project, which he said would help improve the economy of Ogun State.

He added that the airport would help drive the economy of the state, neighbouring states, and the country as a whole, saying that the ease of doing business in the state would also be improved.

He said: “For Ogun State, this airport has the potential of being a hub for every other state around the South-West and improving the ease of doing business. You can travel from here. The potential is enormous. You can’t begin to count; it has its ripple effects on the economy.

“When I was in the National Assembly over the years, I knew of several states in the South-West that tried and struggled to build airports that were nowhere of this size and they were not able to do it. Without taking anything away from them, it’s commendations all the way for Governor Dapo Abiodun.

“I was surprised at what it looks like inside. The outside belies the inside, and I think the governor has done a good job. He deserves to be commended.

“I believe this airport was built in two years and some months, and that is a short period within which to complete an airport such as this.

“It has the longest runway, and you know what that means. So, all in all, we have to give kudos to the governor.

“Coming here today, this is my first time at the airport. I have heard so much about it; he is so proud of it.

“You know it is one thing to put your money somewhere to do something and do it for the sake of doing it. But when you do something and you believe in it and you have a passion for what you are doing, the output, the product, is different because you put your all in it, and that is what I see here in this airport.”

Gbajabiamila described the administration of Governor Abiodun as transformative, with many infrastructural projects across the state.

He continued: “I can only describe his administration in one word: transformative, very transformative.

“We’ve come, we’ve seen, what you see is what you get and each time I come here, I see what his administration is doing, especially in terms of infrastructural development and i give kudos to His Excellency, the governor.”

EFCC vs Yahaya Bello: Root out ‘fake’ lawyers – Okai urges NBA

0
2 mn read

The 2023 People Democratic Party, PDP, candidate for Dekina/Bassa Federal Constituency, Usman Okai, on Saturday called on the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, to root out fake lawyers who undermine the integrity of Nigeria’s judicial system with their deceitful practices.

Okai said fake lawyers are everywhere, holding baseless press conferences to defend embattled former Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello.

On Friday in Abuja, some lawyers led by one Emmanuel Agada accused the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, of disregarding valid court orders and breaching the constitutional rights of Nigerians.

Agada said: “As young lawyers, we envisage a judiciary where justice is not only done but manifestly seen to be done. It is in our patriotic quest to always pursue ventures that guarantee an independent judiciary that dispenses justice without fear nor favour that we formed this civil society of lawyers.”

Reacting to the development, Okai said the NBA must launch a thorough investigation into the duplicitous practices of the concerned lawyers, whose conduct he said tarnishes the reputation of the legal profession.

According to Okai: “The National Judicial Council, NJC, also bears the responsibility of cleansing our legal system of individuals who treat it as nothing more than a marketplace.

“In the realm of law, the term “lawyer” has been reduced to a mere facade, devoid of any substantial practice or ethical integrity.

“These so-called legal practitioners are nothing more than mercenaries for hire, prostituting their services to the highest bidder without a second thought to justice or morality.

“Instead of advocating for justice, individuals like Olukayode deserve commendation for daring to challenge the status quo.

“The alleged court order was obtained through fraudulent means, a blatant mockery of justice.

“No decree can shield criminals like Yahaya Bello, who have shamelessly pillaged our state coffers, from facing the consequences of their actions.

“It is imperative that the international community, including nations like the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and China, dismiss the baseless pleas of these counterfeit lawyers and consign their letters to the oblivion they deserve.

“The whole Nigerians are well aware of Yahaya Bello’s fraudulent activities and must not be swayed by his desperate attempts to evade justice”.

Okai lamented that Kogi State has become a breeding ground for corruption, with unscrupulous individuals shamelessly exploiting its resources for personal gain.

He noted that ‘rampant bribery and corruption’, exemplified by the lavish expenditures on faceless civil society organizations, obscure lawyers, and self-proclaimed pundits, are emblematic of the decay within the society.

“Yahaya Bello, a former governor notorious for his disregard for the rule of law, has transformed Kogi State into his personal fiefdom, appointing cronies as judges and subverting the judiciary to serve his own interests.

“It is incumbent upon the Inspector General of Police and the Department of State Security to root out these fake lawyers, who undermine the integrity of our judicial system with their deceitful practice.”

Speaking further, he said the pervasive culture of legal malpractice and political corruption in Kogi State demands immediate action from both domestic and international institutions.

“We must not allow the sanctity of justice to be defiled by mercenaries masquerading as lawyers, nor permit unscrupulous politicians to trample upon the rule of law for their personal gain,” he added.

The 2023-2024 UEFA Champions League final between Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid on June 1, is coming with a couple of interesting twists.

Borussia Dortmund who have never won the Champions League title despite playing in one final before this season’s final, are certain to make some good money from the tournament this season.

Interestingly, whether they win the tournament or not against Real Madrid, they are entitled to at least 20 million euros due to the conditions in the contract Real Madrid signed with them while buying Jude Bellingham.

Recall that Jude Bellingham moved from Borussia Dortmund to Real Madrid for a transfer fee worth €103 million on July 1, 2023. Since then, he has been outstanding scoring 22 goals and providing 10 assists in 39 games in all competitions.

There is a clause in his contract with Real Madrid that will earn Borussia Dortmund €5 million if the Spanish giants win the Champions League with him.

Not only that, Real Madrid will pay Borussia Dortmund another €2 million if Bellingham makes it to the Champions League team of the tournament.

Aside from that, the German Bundesliga giants will earn €15.5 million which is the official prize money paid to the second runner-up.

This means that if Dortmund lose to Real Madrid in the Champions League final, the German side will make nothing less than €25 million. But if they manage to beat the Spanish giants in the final, the Black and Yellow will make only the prize money of €20 million. They could also make an extra €2 million if Bellingham makes it to the team of the tournament.

Enyimba of Aba assistant coach Olanrewaju Yemi has said his farewell to Super Eagles of Nigeria head coach, Finidi George.

It was reported on Friday that Enyimba are expected to officially announce the exit of Finidi George from the club in the coming days.

But earlier today, Olanrewaju Yemi who is expected to replace Finidi at Enyimba as the club’s head coach, has confirmed the exit of the former Nigeria international via a post on X.

Yemi and Finidi have been working together at the club for over two seasons. They both helped the Aba Elephants to win the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) last season.

While they were working together at Enyimba, Finidi George spent 20 months working as an assistant coach to Jose Peseiro at the level of the Super Eagles.

When Peseiro left the post, the 53-year-old Port Harcourt-born tactician became the interim coach of the national team. He was appointed the head coach of the Eagles in April 2024.

Then, it was not clear whether Finidi would remain the coach of Enyimba while serving as Super Eagles head coach. But that seems to be cleared now as the former Ajax winger is expected to leave his job in Aba for the National team job.

“Working with you for the past two years has been fun and inspiring,” Olarewaju wrote on his X page.

“Thank you for all you do, boss. I wish you the very best with ⁦@NGSuperEagles⁩.”

Finidi George’s first assignment as the head coach of the Super Eagles is to lead the team to play against South Africa on June 3, and against Benin Republic on June 10 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

I always wanted to be an actor – Tiwa Savage

Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage is known as the “Queen of Afrobeats” but now she’s momentarily hanging up her microphone to make her acting debut in the new film, Water & Garri.

The film now showing on Amazon Prime follows a young woman called Aisha, played by Tiwa Savage, an ambitious fashion designer who returns home to Nigeria after 10 years in the United States.

Although the Grammy-nominated singer has enchanted people with her buttery smooth voice, she told the BBC Focus on Africa podcast that acting was always a path she wanted to pursue.

“I have so much respect for actors now. It’s long hours and you’re becoming someone else for a long period of time,” she said.

She told the BBC it was not “easy”.

But Tiwa Savage brought the character to life by channelling parts of herself and her mother.

“She bottles up things a lot and she might just explode one day,” she said.

Aside from acting, she was also an executive producer on the film.

The songstress said she watched at least 200 edits before they decided on the final cut.

It “was a lot of work”, she added.

While the film may be new, inspiration comes from her 2021 EP of the same name.

The movie was initially meant to be the accompanying video on the project, but she said when they started filming “it was so good” they decided to make it into a feature-length film.

But the music from the EP doesn’t feature in the movie as Tiwa Savage said she was no longer in the same “headspace”.

So she began recording new songs for the movie while they were shooting and managed to finish the score for the film within a week.

Songs for the film’s soundtrack feature other Nigerian stars like Olamide and Grammy-nominated singer Ayra Starr.

While the stunning cinematography, the dynamic soundtrack and Tiwa Savage’s performance breathe life into the movie, the heart of the film is the theme of nostalgia.

“There is a nostalgic feeling when you think of water and garri. We used to eat that a lot growing up,” she said.

She added that garri, which is processed cassava, and water are unusual combinations, but when they are mixed together it makes something beautiful.
