Dr. Samson Osagie, the suspended Edo State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, has firmly denied any involvement in financial misconduct, responding to his suspension with a public statement. He clarified that he was not engaged in any financial dealings or infractions and expressed his intention to defend his reputation and innocence. His suspension, along with that of Hon. Damian Lawani, Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, is tied to serious allegations of official and financial misconduct. Governor Monday Okpebholo ordered the suspension to allow for a thorough investigation. The duo will remain suspended pending the outcome of the probe.

Osagie also emphasized that he had not been confronted with these allegations before the announcement of his suspension.

US govt no longer pay fees for vessels plying through Panama Canal

That is indeed a significant shift in the relationship between the U.S. and Panama! The Panama Canal has long been a key strategic asset for both countries, and this agreement, allowing U.S. government vessels to pass through without fees, marks an important moment in the post-Canal Zone era. Historically, the U.S. had control over the canal until it was handed back to Panama in 1999, but the canal’s importance has remained central to global trade and U.S. interests.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Mulino’s discussions seem to indicate a kind of recalibration in how the two countries engage on this issue, especially given the backdrop of President Trump’s earlier comments. His suggestion that Panama should respect the moral and legal principles behind the agreement—or else face the possibility of the U.S. demanding the full return of the canal—adds an interesting layer to the negotiations.

This deal could also have broader implications for U.S.-Latin American relations. It might set a precedent for future negotiations between the U.S. and other countries in the region, as it highlights the strategic leverage the U.S. holds due to its historical involvement with the canal. However, it also opens up questions about Panama’s long-term sovereignty and how other countries will view such agreements.

How do you think this will impact both countries in the long run? Will it strengthen ties, or might it sow some tension in the region?

Netanyahu welcomes Trump’s plan to move Palestinians out of Gaza

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed support for the idea of allowing Palestinians in Gaza who wish to leave the area to do so, without explicitly endorsing the suggestion that the U.S. take control of Gaza. He described it as a “remarkable idea” and said it could potentially lead to a better future, particularly if Gaza were rebuilt. However, Netanyahu did not directly comment on the U.S. potentially sending troops to fight Hamas or financing the rebuilding efforts. The idea of relocating Palestinians from Gaza has been widely condemned internationally, with accusations of ethnic cleansing.

Israel orders army to prepare for Gaza residents’ departure

The situation surrounding Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz’s directive, in the context of President Donald Trump’s Gaza plan, is quite complex and contentious. Katz’s comments about allowing the voluntary departure of Gaza residents, particularly the suggestion that countries critical of Israel’s actions should take in Palestinians, have sparked significant debate and opposition.

The idea of transforming Gaza into a luxury destination like the “Riviera of the Middle East” raises concerns about its practical implementation, especially given the resistance from countries like Russia, China, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan. These global and regional powers have expressed strong opposition, viewing it as a proposal that could exacerbate suffering and deepen existing divisions.

On the other hand, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s support for exploring the plan, while somewhat vague, indicates that Israel might be open to discussions, despite the challenges and criticisms surrounding it. This proposal raises significant geopolitical, humanitarian, and legal issues that will likely continue to generate debate and tension on the global stage.

Flick confirms Barcelona’s first-choice goalkeeper

Hansi Flick has made a significant decision regarding Barcelona’s goalkeeper situation, confirming Wojciech Szczesny as his first-choice shot-stopper. This is an interesting move, especially considering Iñaki Peña’s previous role as the primary keeper after Marc-André ter Stegen’s injury.

Szczesny’s debut in La Liga during the 7-1 victory over Valencia in late January must have impressed Flick, which likely led to this confirmation. It’s also worth noting that Szczesny’s experience at top clubs like Juventus could have played a role in making him a more reliable option for Barcelona at this stage.

Flick’s focus on the team’s best interest also highlights his balanced approach, ensuring that the goalkeeper decision isn’t just based on individual form but also the overall dynamics of the squad.

Do you think Szczesny can keep this starting role, or will Peña get another chance if he performs well in training?

Ebonyi massacre: ‘It’s time for govt decisive action against herdsmen banditry’ – RULAAC

The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has expressed grave concern over the ongoing threat posed by armed herdsmen in Nigeria, particularly following the recent killings of Ebonyi State indigenes. The organization has condemned the failure of both federal and state governments to address the escalating violence, which it describes as a manifestation of herdsmen banditry. RULAAC is particularly alarmed by the massacre, which seems to be a revenge for the killing of cows, highlighting an alarming rise in violent acts in local communities.

The civil rights group pointed out that despite ongoing peace efforts, the failure to tackle the root causes of these conflicts and bring perpetrators to justice continues to instill fear and insecurity. RULAAC also acknowledged the compassionate response of Ebonyi’s Deputy Governor, Princess Patricia Obila, who condemned the killings and called for quick action from the security agencies.

The group emphasized the importance of swift and decisive government action in addressing the threats posed by these armed groups. While it appreciated the Deputy Governor’s efforts, RULAAC reminded that prayers and fasting alone cannot replace the urgent need for a tangible security response. It called for the apprehension of the murderers within 24 hours and stressed the need for the government to prioritize the protection of its citizens, preventing future violence, and providing support and rehabilitation for the victims’ families.

The statement concluded with a call for more robust, sustained dialogue and community engagement to resolve the underlying issues fueling these conflicts, urging the government to take a stronger stance on ensuring the safety of all citizens.

Skepta’s response to fans asking about why he’s trending—“I’ve just seen Portable is dragging somebody again. Apparently, I’m next. We dey wait lol”—shows that he’s aware of the drama but isn’t overly concerned about it.

Portable’s tendency to call out collaborators and benefactors could certainly be a source of anxiety for people like Skepta, especially since the Nigerian artist doesn’t seem to shy away from stirring up controversy. Skepta might be anticipating some sort of public clash, but he’s taking it in stride for now. Given their collaboration on “Tony Montana,” Skepta might be keeping an eye on how things unfold, but it doesn’t sound like he’s letting it affect him too much yet.

Do you think Skepta’s response is a sign of confidence, or do you think he’s just trying to play it cool while privately being more concerned?

Don Jazzy reconciles with Wizkid after online clash

< 1 mn read

Don Jazzy and Wizkid have patched things up after their social media dispute, which was pretty heated a few months ago. The feud stemmed from Wizkid’s comment about “hip hop being dead,” which sparked a response from Ladipoe, a member of Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records. Wizkid’s sharp reply towards Ladipoe and his insinuation that Don Jazzy was just an influencer led to tension. This led to Don Jazzy unfollowing Wizkid on social media at the time.

However, it seems that they’ve moved past that, as evidenced by their recent reunion, which has got the internet buzzing. It’s always interesting to see how these big personalities navigate their differences, especially with how public everything is these days. Do you think their reconciliation might affect the Nigerian music scene or their fans’ perception of them?

The recent inauguration of the Garaku Toll Plaza on the Abuja-Keffi-Akwanga-Lafia-Makurdi Highway marks the official commencement of tolling on this vital road. This initiative is part of a broader public-private partnership (PPP) project aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s road infrastructure and ensuring sustainable maintenance.

Key highlights from the event include:

  • Toll Charges: The toll rates are set as follows:
    • Cars: N500
    • SUVs/Jeeps: N800
    • Minibuses: N1,000
    • Multi-axle vehicles, trucks, and buses: N1,600
  • Discounts and Exemptions: Frequent users, including commercial light vehicles, will receive a 50% discount. Certain vehicles, such as those belonging to the police, military, paramilitary, ambulances, diplomatic missions, and tricycles, will be exempt from toll payments.
  • Financing and Operations: The road’s rehabilitation and upgrade were financed through a preferential credit loan from the China Exim Bank, with toll revenues designated for loan repayment and ongoing road maintenance. MS China Harbour Operations and Maintenance Company is responsible for overseeing the operation and maintenance under a 25-year concession agreement signed in 2023.
  • Technological Integration: To streamline tolling processes, the project will implement cashless payment systems using Point of Sale (POS) terminals, mobile apps, and electronic payment systems.
  • Strategic Importance: The road, which spans 227.2 kilometers, plays a critical role in connecting central and northern Nigeria, facilitating economic and social activities. The initiative has received praise from various officials, including the Governor of Nasarawa State, who called for similar upgrades to other key federal highways.

This project is part of a larger effort to improve infrastructure in Nigeria, with more PPP-driven initiatives expected to follow.

NNPCL asks court to dismiss Dangote Refinery’s suit against fuel import licence

0
2 mn read

This legal battle centers on a suit filed by Dangote Refinery against the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and several other companies, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). Dangote Refinery seeks to challenge the importation licenses granted by NMDPRA to NNPCL and five oil companies, arguing that the issuance of these licenses violates the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), particularly sections 317(8) and (9), which restricts the issuance of such licenses to situations where there is a petroleum product shortfall.

Dangote Refinery is requesting the court to declare these licenses invalid and is also seeking damages of N100 billion, alleging that the continued issuance of these licenses harms its interests and disrupts fair competition in the petroleum sector. The refinery also argues that NMDPRA acted wrongly by issuing these licenses, as Dangote Refinery asserts its own capacity to meet the national demand for petroleum products.

On the other hand, the NNPCL is challenging the suit on the grounds that the Federal High Court does not have the jurisdiction to grant Dangote Refinery’s requests. They have also called for the dismissal of the suit or the removal of NNPCL as a defendant. NMDPRA, in its response, defends the issuance of the licenses, stating that it is within their mandate to issue such licenses to bridge product shortfalls and promote competition within the oil and gas industry. The agency also denies any conspiracy against Dangote Refinery.

In addition, the oil marketers involved in the case argue that granting Dangote Refinery’s request could result in a harmful monopoly in Nigeria’s oil sector, which could have detrimental effects on the industry and the nation.

The court has yet to rule on the matter, with the trial judge, Justice Inyang Edem Ekwo, setting a date for March 18, 2025, to deliver a ruling on the case. The outcome of this case will likely have significant implications for Nigeria’s oil industry, particularly with regard to competition and the regulation of petroleum imports.

Transfer: Harry Kane’s release clause in Bayern Munich contract revealed

< 1 mn read

Harry Kane’s contract with Bayern Munich includes a release clause that could potentially see him return to England in the future, according to BILD. Although Kane’s move to Bayern in 2023 appeared to end his hopes of surpassing Alan Shearer’s Premier League goal record, the release clause introduces a possibility for a return to the Premier League.

As per the terms of his contract, Kane had the option to trigger the clause during the January transfer window for around €80 million (£67m). While this opportunity has passed, the clause will be valid again next January, allowing Kane to leave Bayern for €65 million (£54m).

Despite this potential, Kane is currently thriving at Bayern, both on and off the pitch. He has settled well in Germany with his family and is in good form, but the allure of returning to the Premier League to challenge Shearer’s record of 260 goals could still tempt him, especially as he is now 47 goals behind. It’ll be interesting to see if that option will become more appealing as time passes.

EPL: He could be another Drogba – Fonte hits Chelsea for not signing Osimhen

Jose Fonte’s remarks about Chelsea’s failure to sign Victor Osimhen highlight his belief that the Nigerian striker could have been a perfect fit for the Blues, comparing him to the legendary Didier Drogba. Despite Chelsea’s strong links to Osimhen since last summer, the club didn’t manage to secure his signature, and the striker ultimately moved to Galatasaray on a season-long loan from Napoli.

Fonte, who has had firsthand experience playing against Osimhen, emphasized the qualities that make the 25-year-old a potential star in the Premier League. He praised Osimhen’s combination of pace, power, technical ability, and physicality, suggesting that these traits could make him a dominant force in Chelsea’s attack, much like Drogba was. Fonte further pointed out that Osimhen’s aggressive and clever style of play would make him a handful for defenders in the Premier League.

Fonte also expressed his frustration that no Premier League club signed Osimhen, describing it as a missed opportunity. He believes that Osimhen’s impact in the Premier League would be immediate, adding that the striker’s qualities would be well-suited for English football, where his strength and speed could overwhelm defenders.

With Osimhen now at Galatasaray, Chelsea’s failure to bring him in seems to be a point of regret for Fonte, who is confident that the Nigerian striker will make a major impact once he eventually moves to the Premier League.

Kenneth Omeruo’s departure from Kasimpasa marks the end of a notable chapter in his career with the Turkish Super Lig side. The Nigerian international’s mutual contract termination with the club comes after a season plagued by injury, limiting him to just five appearances. Despite his struggles with fitness this year, Omeruo had been a consistent figure at the heart of Kasimpasa’s defense during his time there, contributing two goals and three assists over 85 appearances across two spells.

Having previously joined the club on loan from Chelsea in 2015 and 2017, Omeruo made the move permanent in 2023. Now, as a free agent, the 31-year-old is reportedly weighing offers from clubs in Saudi Arabia and Qatar, signaling the possibility of continuing his career in one of these emerging football markets.

It’ll be interesting to see where he goes next—Omeruo’s experience and leadership in defense could be a valuable asset to many teams looking for a seasoned player in those regions.

Arteta’s mention of the bond between Nwaneri and his teammates, like Lewis-Skelly, is a testament to how crucial team chemistry is, especially for young players adjusting to the senior team dynamics. It’s nice that Nwaneri has someone close to him for support as he navigates this unique position.

M23 crisis: They’ll remove you from power – Primate Ayodele warns DR Congo president, Tshisekedi

Primate Elijah Ayodele, the leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, has issued a stark warning to the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Felix Tshisekedi, amid the ongoing M23 insurgency in the country. Ayodele’s prophecy suggests that Tshisekedi is at risk of being removed from power due to the ongoing crisis, and he blames a coalition of Western powers, rather than Rwanda, for the turmoil. According to Ayodele, countries like the United States and France are not only aware of the situation but have a vested interest in destabilizing the DRC and removing Tshisekedi from office.

Ayodele’s statement, signed by his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin, advises President Tshisekedi to seek alignment with Russia, China, and North Korea in order to secure his position. He argues that the accusations against Rwanda regarding its role in the M23 crisis are a distraction, suggesting that the true culprits behind the crisis are the Western powers. He further warns that if Tshisekedi doesn’t act quickly and align with these countries, his political future could be at risk.

This prophecy adds to the growing tension surrounding the DRC’s political landscape, with Tshisekedi’s administration already facing internal and external pressures. The situation has drawn significant international attention, as the M23 group continues to destabilize parts of the eastern DRC, while regional and international powers engage in complex geopolitical maneuvers.

The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested 165 illegal immigrants from several West African countries—Burkina Faso, Mali, Ivory Coast, Benin Republic, and Niger Republic—who were found living in cramped conditions in a three-bedroom flat in the Kuwait area of Birnin Kebbi.

The arrest came after a tip-off led detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to the apartment. The police suspect that the individuals may have been involved in illegal migration and financial crimes, specifically the Qnet Ponzi scheme. According to CSP Nafiu Abubakar, the command’s Public Relations Officer, the arrested individuals included 35 from Burkina Faso, 110 from Ivory Coast, 11 from Benin Republic, 5 from Niger Republic, and 4 from Mali.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects did not have valid documentation to be in Nigeria. They have since been handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service for further investigation and processing. This highlights ongoing concerns regarding illegal migration and financial scams in the region.
