The committee summoned these officials after identifying irregularities during its oversight visit on May 7.

Alhaji Kabiru Dauda (APC-Gada East), Chairman, of the House Committee on Health, announced the resolution after the committee met with the contractor handling the construction of Premier Hospital Binji and the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Orthopedic Hospital Wamakko.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the committee had summoned these officials after identifying irregularities during its oversight visit on May 7.

Dauda expressed disappointment that despite two invitations by the committee, the commissioner did not respond in writing or send any representative.

As lawmakers, we are committed to ensuring the best for our people and protecting the government.

“Disregarding our invitation is a violation of legislative empowerment and the rule of law.

“Consequently, the committee ordered the Commissioner to appear at the Assembly on May 21, at noon without fail,” he stated.

Regarding the Premier Hospital in Binji, situated in the headquarters of Binji Local Government Area, Dauda expressed the committee’s total rejection of the project’s execution.

He highlighted discrepancies in quality compared to a similar project in Tambuwal LGA, even though both contractors received a 30% down payment. Dauda lamented the poor quality of work and directed the contractor to return to the site promptly and rectify the deficiencies.

Similarly, concerning the Wamakko Orthopedic Hospital in Wamakko LGA, the committee resolved to investigate the circumstances surrounding the missing medical equipment from the newly constructed sections of the facility.

The chairman expressed concern over how unauthorised individuals accessed the hospital and stole vital facilities intended for the benefit of the people of the state and beyond.

Kelly Clarkson is on weight loss medication, but it’s not Ozempic

Kelly Clarkson has shared she’s using weight loss medication, but it’s not the one people think.

In an interview with Whoopi Goldberg on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” Monday, the topic of weight management came up after Clarkson remarked on how young “The View” co-host is looking these days.

“You’re like Benjamin Button,” Clarkson told Goldberg. “It’s like crazy every time you walk in!”

Goldberg credited it to weight loss efforts and said she’s “lost almost two people.”

“I am doing that wonderful shot that works for folks who need some help,” she said. “And it’s been really good for me.”

Clarkson said she has also lost a great deal of weight with support of medication, adding, “Mine is a different one than people assume, but I ended up having to do that too because my bloodwork got so bad.”

“My doctor chased me for two years, and I was like, ‘No, I’m afraid of it,’” Clarkson said. “I already have thyroid problems. Everybody thinks it’s Ozempic, but it’s not. It’s something else.”

Ozempic, which the US Food and Drug Administration initially approved for treatment of those with type 2 diabetes, and other similar drugs have been a growing topic of conversation in the entertainment industry as Oprah Winfrey and other celebrities have discussed their experiences with the medications.

Clarkson said the prescription she is on helps her body better process sugar. In an interview in January, the singer and talk show host attributed her improved health to walking more after a move to New York and other lifestyle changes.

“I eat a healthy mix. I dropped weight because I’ve been listening to my doctor — a couple years I didn’t,” she said. “And 90 percent of the time I’m really good at it because a protein diet is good for me anyway. I’m a Texas girl, so I like meat — sorry, vegetarians in the world!”

The Edo State Police Command has apprehended an individual who has been using his 4-year-old daughter to upload inappropriate content on Instagram.

This action was taken following reports from Nigerians on social media who raised concerns about indecent images of the child that were being shared on the suspect’s Instagram profile.

Various explicit photos of minors in bikinis and thongs were found on the man’s account.

Additionally, there were pictures of the child at hotels with her father and other adult males.

The father even posted a flyer with a picture of the minor, only wearing underpants, promoting her birthday celebration on May 28, 2024, at Spring Leaders Montessori School in Auchi.

Concerned social media users alerted the authorities and called for the arrest of the individuals involved, including the photographer responsible for the birthday pictures.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the arrest in an official statement released on Sunday, May 12, 2024.

“The Edo State Police Command is aware of the trending video of a child of about 4 years old conspicuously naked and used as adult content in an undisclosed hotel in Auchi, Edo State,” the statement read.

“The Commissioner of Police Edo State Command, CP Funsho Adegboye, immediately drafted a tactical team to go all out and arrest the suspect and his cohort.

“Within 12 hours, the father of the girl was arrested. Investigation has commenced further revelation will be made known to the public.

Following his interaction with children affected by sickle cell disease, Adekunle Gold has announced his intention to contribute to charity organizations that focus on assisting them.

At a recent performance in London, the singer opened up about his own sickle cell status and the struggles he endured while growing up, frequently being hospitalized due to the illness.

Despite his ongoing efforts to uplift individuals living with sickle cell, he recognizes the importance of additional support and has made the decision to work with charities to aid these children.

In his words;

“It took me years to finally be able to share publicly that I was born with Sickle Cell. Over the last 2 years I have spoken about this disease during my performances but I realise that more needs to be done.
Every year over 100,000 children are born with Sickle Cell in Nigeria alone. Sickle Cell has no cure, it is highly under researched because it largely affects West Africans.
This weekend was very emotional for me, met children living with the disease, spoke with parents who are finding it hard to cope amidst the economic crisis in the country.

Thank you to @samiupdate and @sicklecellfoundationng for the work you are doing.

I am inspired by the touching stories and encounters I had last weekend and I want to ensure that all the independent organisations doing the vital work, outreach and research needed to fight Sickle Cell receive the resources and support that they desperately need.

To my Champions, if I can do it, you can do it too.

Nigeria Still Learning – Akpabio Speaks On Democracy In Africa

Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has asserted that the country is still learning about democratic practice.

Akpabio, who spoke yesterday during a courtesy visit by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr Richard Mongtgomery, and his delegation to the Senate leadership at the National Assembly in Abuja, called upon the United Kingdom government to provide assistance in furthering the development of democracy in Nigeria.

Akpabio emphasized the shared history between the two countries and expressed Nigeria’s appreciation for the UK’s contribution in enhancing democratic practices, not only within Nigeria but also across Africa.

In a statement issued by the Special Assistant to the Senate President on Media/Communication, Anietie Ekongthe, the Senate leadership expressed their delight in aligning with the UK and their eagerness to learn from their experiences to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.

The statement said: “Ours is a nascent democracy, we are still at a learning point. Even the advanced democracies are still grappling with some challenges.

“We are learning to run. And we can assure you that standing on the shoulders of a giant like the United Kingdom, we can only get better.

“The 10th Senate has a very robust legislative agenda that is people-centered. Whether it is in the area of the economy, whatever laws we will make must have the welfare of the people of Nigeria in mind. Whether it is in the area of infrastructure, it must be to the benefit of the people.

“We also believe strongly in collaboration. We must exchange ideas in the best practices of democracy. We must bring most of the anachronistic laws and acts of parliament in tandem with modern realities.”

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and delegation of British High Commission

Akpabio informed the delegation that the 10th Assembly, under his leadership, would still amend the Electoral Act to ensure that every vote counts.

On his part, the British High Commissioner, Montgomery, expressed that he visited the Senate due to the enduring partnership between the British High Commission and the National Assembly. He also mentioned that they had previously backed several matters related to democratic principles in Nigeria.

We came to share ideas with the Senate and to understand the vision and priorities of the 10th National Assembly. The UK and Nigeria have a longstanding relationship, and we have incredibly strong people-to-people links between our countries.

“We have very significant connections between our democracies and our democratic institutions. We have many Nigerians working in the UK and many of our people working here.

“We are bound together by families, friendships, business and people-to-people links. That is why the UK has a large diplomatic mission here,” he said.

Two Young Progressive Party (YPP) members in the Abia State House of Assembly have decamped to the ruling Labour Party (LP).

The defected lawmakers are Iheanacho Nwogu representing Osisioma North State Constituency and Fine Ahuama, representing Osisioma South State Constituency.

In their defection letters to the Speaker, Emmanuel Emeruwa, on Tuesday, the lawmakers said they were expelled from the YPP for anti-party activities owing to their support for the present administration in the state.

The lawmakers said leaving the YPP would enable them to join Governor Alex Otti in deepening democracy at the grassroots for the benefit of their constituents.

They pledged to be loyal party men in their new party.

Lawmakers Visit Governor Otti

Nwogu and Ahuama later visited Governor Otti at the Presidential Lodge at the Government House, Umuahia.

They were led on the visit by the House Majority Leader, Uchenna Okoro, who represents Arochukwu State Constituency on the platform of the Labour Party.

Receiving the new entrants into the Labour Party, Otti said that the two former members of the YPP had always supported his administration from its inception, regardless of their political affiliation.

The governor noted that his administration has a different approach to governance, anchored on transparency, service and merit, as evident in the confirmation of a non-Abian as a Permanent Secretary in the Abia State Civil Service.

He assured the new members of equal opportunity with old party members.

He congratulated them on the bold step taken and added that he looks forward to receiving the YPP governorship candidate, Chief Enyinnaya Nwafor, soon.

Nigerian Gov’t Approves Establishment Of Startup Hub In U.S

The Nigerian government has given the green light to convert a Federal Government property in San Francisco, United States (U.S), into a hub for the Nigerian Digital Technology Exchange Programme, also known as Nigeria Startup House.

The Minister of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, made this announcement in a press release yesterday after the end of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.

Tijani highlighted that the ministry has obtained two approvals that present significant opportunities for Nigerians.

The first approval pertains to the establishment of a startup hub in the US, while the second involves the provision of an additional 90,000 kilometres (km) of fibre optic cable to enhance the existing connectivity infrastructure.

Regarding the startup house, the minister emphasized that this development will play a crucial role in attracting foreign direct investments to the country.

“As we work towards achieving key elements of our Trade and IEC strategic blueprint pillars, the Nigerian Startup House will play a critical role in promoting Nigeria’s economic interest, attracting foreign direct investment and improving the visibility and positioning of Nigeria’s startup ecosystem to attract funding and expertise from global markets and organisations represented in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond,” he said.

The Minister added: “The San Francisco Bay Area and nearby Silicon Valley are recognised globally as major sources of startup ecosystem funding. With a combined GDP value of just over $929 billion, they are home to over 200 of the largest companies in the world by revenue.

“In addition, most of the $1.3 billion funding sourced by Nigerian technology startups in 2023 alone came from Venture Capital funds in the Bay Area.”

Tijani explained that while the Nigeria Startup House will remain owned by the Federal Government, it will be managed by a consortium of Nigerian digital technology companies, which will provide non-public funding for its operations.

A Nigerian doctor in Gombe State identified as Sagir Mamuda, better known as Doctor Saggy, is dead.

Naija News reports that his colleagues shared the news of his demise via X while calling on the government to regulate the working hours of medical doctors in Nigeria.

One of the friends of the deceased, El-bonga, who also took to his X account to mourn Saggy, said he collapsed on duty in January 2024 and had been bedridden before he was transferred to Lagos State.

The death of the doctor comes barely five months after his wedding.

The post read, “Our friend @bigsaggy, a medical doctor, got married in December 2023. However, in January 2024, he collapsed on duty and got hospitalised. He later went into comma and was transferred to Lagos. All that while, he hardly knew his whereabout. Today, he died after months at the ICU.

“Dr. Sagir was a young man full of intelligence and passion about his medical field. Very humble and friendly, he was someone with a very bright future. Nonetheless, the creator knows best by taking him away from us this soon. You hardly see him angry amongst friends. This life is very unpredictable. Death is always lurking around. Dr. Sagir got married in December 2023 in what was supposed to be his proudest moment to settle in order to start a family. Quite sadly, that proudest moment of his life came with a different challenging chapter.

“A young man in his early thirties is gone. If he’d been told a day earlier he would collapse while on duty as a doctor, he would doubt the possibility of that happening. This isn’t the first case of people collapsing at work. It’s really sad for such a young, promising man.In a 2013 tweet, Dr. Sagir once tweeted about the ineluctability of death coming to people when they least expect it. 11 years later, death came to him when he least expected it.”
