< 1 mn read

A bill aimed at amending the 1999 Constitution to permit independent candidacies in elections has successfully passed its first reading in the House of Representatives. Sponsored by Rep. Akintunde Rotimi (APC-Ekiti), the bill seeks to enable individuals to contest elections without political party sponsorship.

FOR PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS, independent candidates must secure verified signatures from at least 10% of registered voters across two-thirds of the states. Similarly, for state assembly elections, they need signatures from 10% of voters in two-thirds of electoral wards. Rotimi emphasized that this bill aims to democratize the political landscape and enhance participation, particularly for those unable to rely on political party backing.

MS. JOKE FABORODE, CEO OF ELECT HER, voiced support for the bill, highlighting its potential to empower marginalized groups, including women, youths, and individuals with disabilities. She urged Nigerians to back the initiative for a more inclusive electoral process.
