Chidmma Adetshina, the reigning Miss Universe Nigeria, recently shared the reasons behind her decision to delete her Twitter account. The Nigerian-South African beauty queen disclosed that the move was prompted by the overwhelming negativity and backlash she encountered following the controversy surrounding her nationality and her victory in the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant.
In an interview on Arise 360, Adetshina revealed that she is an avid reader of comments and would spend hours going through them. However, this habit became detrimental to her mental health, leading her to seek relief by removing herself from Twitter. “I’m not on Twitter,” she admitted. “I had to delete it because I felt like it was too much for me. I’m a comment reader, so I read each and every comment; that’s the thing. So for me, I could spend 80% of my day reading comments. I’d read the comments and all, and it became toxic for me.”
She further explained that while she continues to use Instagram, she has also had to limit her comment section to protect her well-being. Despite the challenges, Adetshina acknowledged the support she receives from her fans but also recognized the risks they face in openly supporting her. “Sometimes there are people in the comment section saying, ‘I really like you, but I don’t want to put my feelings out there,’ and it’s valid because when people support me, they get dragged. I don’t want people to go through something like that for supporting me,” she expressed.
This interview follows Chidimma’s withdrawal from the Miss South Africa pageant after allegations of fraud and identity theft involving her mother emerged from the South African Home Office. Her withdrawal led to significant backlash from South Africans, which only intensified when she was later invited to compete in the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant by the Silverbird Group, where she ultimately claimed the title. However, even her victory was met with criticism, as some speculated that she won out of pity rather than merit.
