In preparation for the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), the Building Blocks for Peace Foundation (BBFORPEACE) has launched a climate conversation in Nasarawa State. The organization hosted a one-day community dialogue in Lafia, bringing together over 70 stakeholders, including traditional leaders, local government officials, business owners, religious leaders, youth, women, people with disabilities, and civil society organizations.

The dialogue highlighted Nasarawa State’s proactive approach to climate change as participants discussed its effects within the state and identified strategies for mitigation and adaptation. This event is part of BBFORPEACE’s Climate Action for Stronger Naija project, which aims to enhance the implementation of Nigeria’s climate policies, particularly the National Adaptation Plan on Climate Change and the Nationally Determined Contributions.

Mr. Samson Shabu, the program officer for BBFORPEACE, representing Executive Director Mr. Rafiu Lawal, noted that the dialogue is a vital step in the project, building on prior training for ten youth civil society organizations in the state regarding the importance of these climate policies. He added that the dialogue serves as a foundation for creating a Local Adaptation Plan of Action for Nasarawa State.

The Emir of Lafia, represented by Mr. Aliyu Isa Shuaibu, praised BBFORPEACE for addressing climate change, emphasizing its detrimental impacts on the state, including erosion, droughts, and floods. He stated, “As traditional leaders, we recognize the importance of preserving our environment for future generations. Our communities are already experiencing the effects of climate change, including erosion, droughts, and floods. We owe it to ourselves and our children to act now.”

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Yakubu Kwanta, reiterated the state government’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s climate policies, focusing on sustainable land management, renewable energy, and climate-resilient infrastructure
