The Bauchi state government has closed 39 private colleges of education for operating without proper registration and infrastructure. Commissioner for Higher Education Lydia Tsammani announced on August 15 that these institutions lacked approval from the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) and had inadequate facilities.

Tsammani criticized the colleges for operating in makeshift locations and using unqualified teachers. The government had previously issued a notice requiring unregistered colleges to complete their registration within six months to avoid sanctions.

Twelve colleges with NCCE approval are allowed to continue if they meet requirements for qualified staff and updated facilities.
