A Bangladeshi student leader, Shamim Ahmed, was brutally beaten to death at Jahangirnagar University in Dhaka. Ahmed, a prominent member of the student wing of the Awami League party, was targeted in revenge for his role in attacking protesters during the recent uprising against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Ahmed was assaulted by unknown assailants on Wednesday night and later died from his injuries at Gonoshasthaya Hospital. This incident marks the second killing of an Awami League student leader this month, following the death of Abdullah Al Masud, who was beaten by a mob in Rajshahi.

The violence comes in the wake of widespread unrest that led to Hasina’s ouster in early August. The former premier fled Bangladesh as protesters stormed her palace. Her administration faced allegations of severe human rights abuses, including mass detentions and extrajudicial killings. Since her departure, her government’s allies have been arrested, and there have been significant purges from judicial and financial institutions.

The interim government, now led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, faces ongoing challenges as it navigates the aftermath of Hasina’s regime and the associated violence.
