Average domestic air fare surged by 25.5% month-on-month (MoM) to N123,700 in August 2024, up from N98,561 in July 2024, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in its ‘Transport Fare Watch’ report released recently.
Niger State recorded the highest air fare at N129,575, closely followed by Abuja at N129,442.
The NBS report indicated that “the average fare paid by air passengers for specified routes for a single journey was N123,700.14 in August 2024, reflecting a 25.51% increase compared to the previous month (July 2024).” Year-on-year, the fare rose by 56.56% from N79,011.38 in August 2023.
In terms of air transport charges, Niger had the highest at N129,575.21, while Zamfara recorded the lowest fare at N102,665.89, followed by Cross River with N120,088.93.
In another category, the fare for intercity bus journeys per drop was N7,159 in August 2024, showing a slight increase of 0.59% MoM from N7,117 in July 2024. Anambra recorded the highest bus fare at N9,580.85, while Kwara had the lowest at N5,574.46.
Additionally, the average fare for motorcycle rides, commonly known as Okada, was N524.22 per drop in August 2024, marking an increase of 8.46% MoM from N483.33 in July 2024.
