Atletico Madrid announced on Monday that a fan has been permanently banned for throwing objects onto the field during the heated derby against Real Madrid, which ended in a 1-1 draw at the Estadio Metropolitano on Sunday.
The match was temporarily halted for 15 minutes after home fans threw various objects, including lighters, at the Madrid players. Angel Correa’s dramatic equaliser in the 95th minute secured a late point for Atletico.
In a statement, Atletico Madrid confirmed that their security department is collaborating with the police to identify additional individuals involved in the incident, who will also face permanent expulsion once located.
The club expressed its strong commitment to eradicating violence and upholding the values of sportsmanship, stating, “Our firm conviction to eradicate any form of violence and our defense of the values of sport are unquestionable.”
In response to the incident, Atletico Madrid will implement new regulations regarding fans’ clothing at the stadium. The club plans to prohibit any items or garments that obscure a person’s face to hide their identity, which was not previously covered in their regulations. Failure to comply with this rule will result in immediate expulsion from the stadium.
Atletico’s next home match is scheduled for October 20 against Leganes in La Liga.
