In a transformative step for Nigeria’s educational and employment sectors, the Aid for Rural Education Access Initiative (AREAi) has inaugurated the Centre for Digital Development and Innovation Research (CDDIR). This new think tank aims to bridge the gap between students, teachers, government, and digital innovation through evidence-based research and technological tools.
AREAi’s Executive Director, Prince Gideon Olanrewaju, emphasized the centre’s commitment to not only focusing on students but also collaborating with teachers, parents, and government bodies. “Students are at the heart of our initiative, but our efforts will also involve various stakeholders to integrate technology into teaching and learning,” Olanrewaju stated during the launch.
The centre is set to address the shortcomings of many digital tools developed during the COVID-19 pandemic, which often lacked contextual relevance. Olanrewaju stressed the need for evidence-based interventions to create sustainable solutions tailored to the specific needs of Nigerian communities.
Edidiong Simeon, Director of Programmes at AREAi, described CDDIR as a “do-think tank” that will spearhead digital innovation, policy development, and skills enhancement. “Our goal is to build a digitally competent society where knowledge and skills can improve livelihoods,” Simeon noted.
In addressing the high unemployment rate among Nigerian graduates, Olanrewaju highlighted how digital innovation can provide employment opportunities with competitive compensation. He also underscored the potential for digital tools to transform key sectors like recruitment and education, citing past inefficiencies in non-digital processes.
With the launch of CDDIR, AREAi aims to lead Nigeria’s education sector into the digital age, focusing on digital innovation research, capacity development, digital learning strategies, and promoting technology in education. Digital Communications Officer Omoniyi Lawson reiterated the centre’s goal to enhance digital literacy and empower citizens through collaboration with governments and institutions.
