The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun has announced its withdrawal from the local government elections scheduled for February 22, 2025. This decision was based on the February 10 Court of Appeal ruling, which reinstated its previously sacked council chairmen and councillors. According to a letter signed by the APC State Publicity Secretary, Alao Kamorudeen, and addressed to the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, the party has declared that the local government election is unnecessary, as the seats are no longer vacant due to the Court of Appeal’s judgment.
The judgment overturned a previous Federal High Court decision that had dismissed the APC’s local government officials, effectively restoring them to their positions. This ruling led to a dispute between the APC and the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), with both parties claiming control over local government offices. The resulting tensions led to violent clashes, resulting in casualties and injuries, as confirmed by the police.
This withdrawal by the APC has added another layer of complexity to the already fraught political situation in Osun, especially with the ongoing crisis between the two major political parties.
