The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi for urging Nigerians to take to the streets in protest against the rising cost of living. APC spokesman Felix Morka characterized Amaechi’s remarks as “highly irresponsible” and “unpatriotic,” emphasizing the inappropriateness of his criticisms given his long tenure in politics.

In a statement released on Friday, Morka accused Amaechi of speaking from a position of privilege, suggesting that he was out of touch with the struggles of ordinary Nigerians. He referred to Amaechi’s comments as “insensitive, god-awful, and unpatriotic,” citing his extensive political career as a “freeloader” benefiting from state resources while contributing to the economic challenges currently facing the country.

Morka’s statement included a pointed critique of Amaechi’s claims about corruption in government, questioning how someone with his political history could now complain about the inability to afford basic necessities like diesel. He suggested that Amaechi’s criticisms stem from frustration over not being in power, framing his calls for protests as an attempt to manipulate public sentiment for selfish political gains.

The APC spokesman further argued that Nigerians are perceptive and aware that the economic difficulties associated with the administration’s reforms are temporary and will yield long-term benefits. He dismissed the notion of inciting violence as hypocritical and dangerous, asserting that it is irresponsible to exploit citizens’ discomfort for political leverage.

Morka concluded by criticizing Amaechi and other former political leaders for failing to improve the economy during their time in office, labeling them as a “tribe of naysayers” who only voice grievances when they are out of power. He urged Amaechi to focus on resolving issues in Rivers State, which he once governed, instead of promoting unrest on a national level.
