The APC Campaign Council for the Edo Governorship Election has urged the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to conduct compulsory drug tests on all candidates running in the election. The call was made by the council’s Director of Media, Kassim Afegbua, in a statement issued on Wednesday in Benin.
Afegbua emphasized the need for candidates to undergo drug testing to ensure their mental and physical fitness for governance. He called on the NDLEA to focus on candidates from all major political parties to confirm their sanity.
“We have received information suggesting that some candidates might be heavy users of banned substances, including alcohol,” Afegbua stated. “A comprehensive test will reveal their true state of sanity.”
He highlighted the importance of voters making informed decisions to avoid electing a candidate who could misuse state resources for personal indulgences. Afegbua argued that such tests are essential to prevent any potential embarrassment and ensure that the elected governor is fit to lead.
“Our candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, is ready to undergo any tests required,” Afegbua added. “We expect the same commitment from the other candidates to verify their mental fitness.”
He urged the NDLEA to act swiftly and conduct these tests to safeguard Edo State from electing someone who could bring disgrace to the state. Afegbua stated that the council will continue to pressure the NDLEA until the request is fulfilled.
“With numerous issues like insecurity, unemployment, deteriorating infrastructure, poor healthcare, lack of potable water, and failing education in Edo State, the people deserve a governor with a clear and sane mind to lead us towards progress,” he concluded.
