Nnaghe Itam, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra, has called on motorists to ensure regular servicing of their vehicles to prevent accidents. The appeal was made in a statement by the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, in Awka on Thursday.
Itam expressed concern over the number of unroadworthy vehicles on the road, which often lead to avoidable accidents. He cited a recent incident at Oye Agu Junction in Njikoka Local Government Area, where a brake failure caused a Toyota Camry to crash into roadside traders, resulting in the death of a five-year-old girl and injuries to several others.
“The loss of life and injuries from the accident could have been avoided if the vehicle had been properly maintained,” Itam said. He urged motorists and transporters to perform necessary checks on their vehicles before taking them on the road and to be particularly safety-conscious during the ‘Ember’ months.
The Commissioner extended condolences to the family of the deceased, confirmed that the vehicle involved in the accident has been recovered, and noted that an investigation is underway.
