Nigerian comedian Atunyota Alleluya Akpobome, popularly known as Ali Baba, has recounted a chilling near-death experience involving former military leader General Sani Abacha during a recent appearance on the Leadership Podcast.

The 59-year-old comedian reflected on a particular event in Abuja during Abacha’s regime, where he was invited to host a cultural performance. He recalled the tense atmosphere when he was tasked with introducing an Akwa Ibom cultural group.

Describing the encounter, Ali Baba stated, “The first close encounter I had with death was with Sani Abacha.” He recalled the moment he boldly confronted Abacha, who was wearing dark Ray-Ban sunglasses. In an unexpected move, Ali Baba asked the president, “Your Excellency, sir, it’s almost 10; why are you wearing dark shades? Don’t you want to see their performance? Remove this shade nah.”

To his astonishment, Abacha complied with the request. However, Ali Baba’s anxiety grew as he observed operatives from the State Security Service (SSS), also known as the Department of State Services (DSS), moving backstage, creating a tense environment.

As the performance began, Ali Baba noticed the SSS officers positioning themselves backstage, and the comedian, feeling a mix of fear and resolve, chose to sit beside the intimidating president rather than retreating to safety. This choice highlighted the precarious nature of the situation and Ali Baba’s awareness of the potential consequences of his boldness.
