Algeria breached the fortress gates of Namboole.

Uganda’s hopes of making an impact in the World Cup qualifiers suffered a setback as defensive errors led to a crucial defeat against Algeria at Namboole Stadium. Despite a promising start with Travis Mutyaba’s early goal, Uganda’s defense crumbled, allowing Algeria to capitalize and secure a 2-1 victory.

After a composed win against Botswana days earlier, Uganda had high hopes but struggled against Algeria’s strong attack. Defensive lapses, including Halid Lwaliwa’s slip that led to Algeria’s equalizer, proved costly for the Cranes. Another mistake allowed Said Behrama to score, further dampening Uganda’s chances.

Despite attempts to rally, Uganda couldn’t overcome Algeria’s luck and missed opportunities, including a denied penalty appeal. Lwaliwa was substituted, but the damage was done, and Uganda now finds itself at the bottom of the group standings.

With six points, Uganda remains in contention, but the road ahead is challenging. Algeria’s confidence is soaring, making them the favorites to lead the group. Coach Paul Put faces the daunting task of addressing the team’s defensive vulnerabilities before the next qualifiers in March 2025, starting with an away match against Mozambique.

Algeria sits comfortably at the top of the group with nine points, while Guinea aims to join them with a win over Mozambique.
