Alan Shearer has proposed that Marcus Rashford might need to consider leaving Manchester United to rejuvenate his England career. The former England and Newcastle striker believes that Rashford’s current form does not justify a place in the Three Lions squad.
Shearer’s Advice on Rashford’s Career
Shearer has suggested that a change of environment could help Rashford rediscover his best form. He stated, “In his current form, I don’t see Marcus Rashford reviving his England career. I’m not sure about his mentality or approach in training, but the only way back is to train hard and have the right attitude. From what I observe, it seems he should have left Manchester United to reignite his career, as he has become quite static and hasn’t been performing well for some time now.”
Shearer’s comments have sparked discussion, especially since Manchester United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, had previously criticized Shearer’s punditry. Ten Hag had defended Rashford in response to Shearer’s assessment, but Shearer has maintained his position.
Shearer Stands by His Comments
Shearer commented, “I was content with what I said about Manchester United and Marcus Rashford. I understand Ten Hag’s reaction because he was asked about one of his players and had to protect him. However, I stand by everything I said. Nothing has changed from what I saw.”
Despite Rashford’s impressive 2022/23 season, where he scored 30 goals for Manchester United—making him the first player to achieve this since Robin van Persie in 2013—Shearer believes a new challenge might be necessary for the forward to regain his top form.
