Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL) began this year’s festivities with an African Fashion Showcase at the US Embassy in London, celebrating Black History Month. Queen Ronke Ademiluyi Ogunwusi, Founder of AFWL, expressed pride in the opportunity to spotlight African design talent at such a prestigious venue. Queen Ronke, a British citizen and African Queen, is a strong advocate for sustainable fashion.
In her speech, she thanked Rodney Ford, Head of Public Affairs, for supporting cultural exchange between the US and the UK by hosting the event. Queen Ronke emphasized the role of AFWL in celebrating the rich connection between Africa and the global community, particularly in the UK and US.
She also recognized Mary Martin London, a member of the AFWL team and acclaimed fashion designer, who was recently honored with a day named after her in Atlanta, Georgia, highlighting the profound impact individuals can make through their work.
Additionally, Queen Ronke welcomed Rebecca Lewis as an Ambassador for AFWL, praising her vision and passion. She also expressed gratitude to Blacks in Diplomacy and the entire AFWL team for their continued support.
In her closing remarks, Queen Ronke stressed that Black history is an ongoing journey of resilience, creativity, and collaboration, urging everyone to honor the past, celebrate the present, and inspire the future beyond a month-long observance.
The 2024 edition of Africa Fashion Week London is scheduled for October 11-12 at the Kensington and Chelsea Conference Center, featuring over 30 vendors showcasing African heritage to a global audience.
