The Pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has committed to mobilizing and collaborating with Nigerians to combat the practices of unitarianism in the nation’s political landscape. This declaration follows their monthly meeting held at Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State, at the residence of their leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo.
In a communique issued after the meeting, Afenifere’s Deputy Leader, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, and National Publicity Secretary, Justice Faloye, emphasized the organization’s resolve to unite with democratic forces against policies and practices that threaten the federal structure of Nigeria.
Concerns Over Proposed Electoral Bill
Afenifere expressed concern regarding the recent introduction of a bill to establish a National Independent Local Government Electoral Commission (NILGEC) tasked with conducting local government elections. They view this initiative as a significant escalation of the inefficiencies already present within the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and as a move that further entrenches unitarianism in Nigeria.
The organization criticized the notion of a federal agency overseeing local elections, describing it as a tool for the central government’s ongoing efforts to consolidate power and undermine the federal system. They argue that this policy has reached its peak under the current administration.
Condemnation of Political Practices
In their statement, Afenifere condemned what they termed “political rascality” that undermines democracy at both tiers of government. They also denounced political gerrymandering, which they believe pushes Nigeria towards a unitary state, contrary to the principles of federalism outlined in the nation’s covenant.
The organization reiterated that both the Federal Government and INEC have demonstrated inadequacies in managing the limited electoral responsibilities assigned to them by the Constitution. Afenifere’s call to action signals a renewed commitment to defend Nigeria’s federal structure and ensure that democratic practices are upheld in the country.
