The pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has called for a restructuring of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, suggesting that graduates should serve within their respective geopolitical zones. Afenifere argues that this change would reduce the risk of corps members being kidnapped by bandits or other criminal groups.

The organization made this appeal in light of the rising kidnapping and banditry incidents across the country. Afenifere commended the Federal Government for successfully rescuing some NYSC members who were abducted while traveling from Akwa Ibom to Sokoto State.

The group also urged the government to increase investment in security equipment to enhance the effectiveness of security agencies.

In a statement by Afenifere National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, the organization emphasized that NYSC enrollees should serve in their local zones rather than being posted to distant regions. While acknowledging the successes of security agencies, Afenifere noted that these achievements are overshadowed by the numerous security challenges faced across the country.

Ajayi highlighted the rampant fear of kidnappers and bandits, compounded by the porous borders that have allowed an influx of small arms and light weapons from the Sahel region. The group also pointed to illegal mining as a factor contributing to poor governance, displacement of local populations, and increased unemployment, which in turn fuels the cycle of banditry.
