Mr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), expressed concern over Nigeria’s stagnation in various developmental areas, stating that after 64 years of independence, the country should be among the developed nations of the world. He made these remarks while delivering a lecture titled “Building a Global Nigeria” in honor of retired General Yakubu Gowon’s 90th birthday in Abuja.
Adesina reflected on the dreams of Nigeria’s founding fathers, who envisioned the country as a shining light for Africa and the black race. He emphasized Nigeria’s unique position as the largest black nation, stating that it should embody the hopes and aspirations of all black people and inspire the entire African continent.
He lamented that Nigeria’s development has been slow, asserting, “Certainly, 64 years after independence, Nigeria should not be a developing country but should be a developed nation.” Adesina noted that during his travels across Africa, many leaders have inquired about Nigeria’s development, highlighting its significance for the continent’s rise.
To illustrate his point, he cited Saudi Arabia’s rapid development, which has positively influenced other Gulf nations such as the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Kuwait, transforming them into global giants.
