At least 10 individuals, including women, children, and the elderly, have died from an acute diarrhoea disease in Yola North and Yola South Local Government Areas of Adamawa State. The number of casualties may increase, as some patients in the hospital are in critical condition.

State Commissioner for Health, Mr. Felix Tangwami, confirmed the outbreak, noting that 300 people have been admitted to Yola Specialist Hospital, with many in critical condition. Some patients have been treated and discharged, while new cases continue to emerge.

Tangwami stated that patients with severe symptoms have been isolated at the Infectious Disease Center of the Specialist Hospital. He assured that the government is doing everything possible to manage the situation, but results from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) are awaited to confirm the exact cause.

“The situation is under control but remains serious. We are not hiding anything; we are following due process to handle this health crisis,” Tangwami said.

He added that confirmation of whether the outbreak is cholera will only come after thorough analysis of the samples, which are being sent to Abuja for testing. The results are expected in the next 48 hours. Tangwami advised against jumping to conclusions without expert input on health matters.
