Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has released a photo of Amaka Patience Sunnberger, a Canada-based Nigerian woman who threatened to poison Nigerians from the Southwest (Yorubas) and Edo State (Binis) due to their alleged hatred for the Igbos. The threat was made during a TikTok live session, where Sunnberger expressed her views in a one-minute 50-second audio clip that has since gone viral.
The incident highlights ongoing tribal tensions and supremacy battles among Nigerian youths on social media, especially following the 2023 presidential election, which heightened ethnic divisions. The audio clip sparked significant backlash, leading Dabiri-Erewa to share Sunnberger’s image on X (formerly Twitter) and confirm that she had deleted her TikTok account. Nigerians in Canada have reported her to the relevant authorities.
The tribal conflict on X traces back to the 2023 presidential election, which was won by Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The election’s aftermath saw increased ethnic animosity, particularly between Yoruba and Igbo youths. This hostility has been fueled by social media campaigns like the “Igbomustgo” initiative, which urged Yorubas to expel Igbos from Lagos. Despite condemnation from political leaders, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, such hate-driven interactions continue to divide Nigerian youths along ethnic lines.
