Transporters and commuters in Abia are expressing severe dissatisfaction over the recent increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol. The price has surged from ₦617 to ₦897 per litre as announced by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) effective September 3.

The sharp increase has led to higher transport fares and a rise in the cost of goods. Many residents are finding the situation “highly unbearable.” Enyichi Nnadede, a tricyclist in Aba, lamented that the cost of fuel, now ₦1,200 per litre, is making it difficult for him to sustain his family, as his daily earnings are insufficient to cover both fuel and basic needs.

Agu Chukwuma, a transporter in Umuahia, reported buying fuel at ₦1,100 per litre on Wednesday. He expressed frustration over the adverse impact on his business, noting that he is struggling to make a profit.

Commuter Adiele Chinaza criticized the government’s policies, stating that the increased transport fares are making it difficult for civil servants to manage their expenses, especially with a minimum wage of ₦70,000.

Onyinyechi Ekwonye from Umuahia warned that the increase in transport fares due to rising fuel prices will negatively affect the prices of goods and services. Ekwonye urged the Nigeria Labour Congress to challenge these harsh economic policies, which are exacerbating the ongoing economic hardship.
