Abia State Government has announced that it will commence the implementation of the new minimum wage from October 2024.

Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this in Umuahia during a press briefing following the recent Executive Council meeting. He stated that the payment would apply to all categories of workers, fulfilling Governor Alex Otti’s promise to Abia workers.

The Commissioner emphasized that this decision underscores the current administration’s commitment to the welfare of workers. It follows the Federal Government’s recent approval of N70,000 as the new minimum wage after extensive negotiations with labor unions.

Additionally, the State Government plans to flag off the construction of ultramodern court halls in each of the 17 Local Government Areas in two weeks to ensure the administration of justice is not impeded.

Kanu also announced the upcoming construction of a 19.4-kilometre road in Isiala Ngwa North and South LGAs under the RAMP project. He attributed Abia State’s recent top performance in the National Examination Council (NECO) results to ongoing educational reforms by the current administration, expressing confidence that performance will improve in the coming years.

Moreover, the Governor is expected to host the Abia contingent that recently participated in the Paralympics, celebrating their achievements.

Commissioner for Sports, Mr. Ananaba Nwobilor, expressed satisfaction with the Abia team’s performance at the Under 15 National Youth Games, where the state won 31 medals, including seven gold, 12 silver, and 12 bronze, marking Abia’s highest overall position in history.

He highlighted the current administration’s investments in sports development, noting that six young players discovered during the All Secondary School Games are now training in Hungary. Additionally, two players from the Abia Angels have gone to a European club on loan, and another player is currently on a full scholarship in the United States while playing soccer.
