The Abia State Government has announced the implementation of a new minimum wage of ₦70,000, set to take effect in October 2024. This announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing following a recent Executive Council meeting in Umuahia.

Kanu emphasized that the new wage will apply to all categories of workers, reflecting the administration’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of its employees. He noted that this initiative aligns with Governor Alex Otti’s promise to Abia workers and represents a significant step towards improving their livelihoods.

In addition to the minimum wage announcement, Kanu revealed plans to construct ultramodern court halls in each of the 17 Local Government Areas within the next two weeks. He stated, “This is to ensure that the administration of justice is not impeded in any way.”

Further infrastructure developments were also highlighted, including the flag-off of a 19.4-kilometre road project in Isiala Ngwa North and South, which will be executed under the RAMP initiative.

Kanu attributed Abia State’s impressive performance in the recent National Examination Council (NECO) results to the ongoing educational reforms implemented by the current administration. He expressed optimism that the state’s educational performance will continue to improve in the future, underscoring a commitment to both education and infrastructure development.
