As the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states draw closer, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has issued a comprehensive caution against the abuse of incumbency power. In a statement, Yakubu emphasized the need for a fair electoral process, highlighting the potential consequences of denying opposition parties access to campaign spaces, which often leads to breaches of peace.

Yakubu’s warning comes amidst preparations for the upcoming elections, with the Edo State governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2024, and the Ondo State election set to take place on November 16, 2024. As part of the electoral process, the Continuous Voter Registration exercise will run concurrently in both states from May 27 to June 5, providing eligible voters with the opportunity to register or update their registration details.

Highlighting the timeline for campaign activities, Yakubu noted that political parties in Edo State began their campaigns on April 24, 2024, and will conclude them at midnight on September 19, 2024. This timeline ensures that all parties have sufficient time to engage with voters and present their platforms ahead of the elections.

Speaking at a meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security in Abuja, Yakubu stressed the crucial role of security agencies in maintaining law and order during the electoral process. He called for security protection for INEC personnel and materials deployed for the elections, emphasizing the importance of a peaceful and orderly electoral environment.

Yakubu’s comprehensive warning underscores INEC’s commitment to ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections in Edo and Ondo states. By addressing potential issues such as incumbency power abuse and security concerns, INEC aims to facilitate a smooth electoral process that reflects the will of the people.
