Milky doughnuts inside poto poto” – Reactions as Medical Experts Raise Concerns over Milky Doughnuts

Nigerians may be shocked to hear that the craze for milky doughnuts covered in condensed or powdered milk can be more hassle than benefit.

The craze began with TikTok, a popular video app among Nigerians. Videos that highlighted the deliciousness of Milky Doughnuts went viral.

The craze extended to X (formerly Twitter), where comedians hopped on board to produce videos including fan-made versions. Online sellers took advantage of the excitement and actively advertised the snack, riding the wave of popularity.

Following extensive study on this well-liked snack, medical professionals have expressed doubts about its safety and advise Nigerians to consume it in moderation.

Speaking with PUNCH on Monday, April 8, these medical experts raised concerns about the possibility that Milky Doughnuts might contribute to diabetes, hypertension, and obesity among other health problems.

They highlighted the generally low nutritional value of junk food and pointed out the high levels of fat, sugar, and calories in these doughnuts, which can contribute to unhealthy weight gain.

“These doughnuts are low in nutrients, making them an inadequate dietary choice,” warned Charles Ogunikpe, a dietician.

“The high sugar content can increase the risk of gum disease and cavities. Additionally, Milky Doughnuts have a high glycemic index, meaning they can cause blood sugar spikes.”
