Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, is addressing some of the controversies surrounding his leadership and relationship with key political figures, particularly former governor and current senator, Adams Oshiomhole. Okpebholo defended Oshiomhole against accusations of being a dictator, emphasizing that the senator has allowed him the freedom to govern the state independently. Okpebholo described his interactions with Oshiomhole as supportive, with the senator offering advice when needed but never dictating his actions.

He also refuted claims that he was handpicked by godfathers to be a puppet governor, asserting that his rise to power was a result of divine intervention, with key individuals offering support along the way. Okpebholo’s statements highlight his desire to distance himself from any perception of external control in his leadership and to present himself as a leader who makes decisions in the best interest of the people.

Okpebholo won the governorship election in September 2024, defeating candidates from the PDP and Labour Party, and assumed office in November 2024 after the tenure of Godwin Obaseki of the PDP. His remarks may be an attempt to consolidate his political independence and reassure the people of Edo State that he is in charge of the state’s affairs.
