The EU’s efforts to bolster Nigeria’s digital economy are part of a broader initiative called the EU-Nigeria Digital Economy Package. This package aims to foster Nigeria’s digital transformation, focusing on large-scale infrastructure projects, digital public services, and workforce upskilling.

Key highlights include:

  • National Fibre-optic Expansion: With the support of the EU, Nigeria is undertaking a massive 90,000 km fibre-optic expansion to improve connectivity, benefiting both urban and rural areas. This initiative is designed to increase digital infrastructure and strengthen Nigeria’s digital economy.
  • Support for Digital Public Services: The EU is providing financial and technical support for digitizing Nigerian public services. This includes enhancing the National Identity Management Commission’s infrastructure and facilitating digital government services to improve interaction with citizens and businesses.
  • Investment in Skills Development: One of the prominent EU programs is focused on upskilling the workforce. This includes the 3 Million Technical Talents initiative, which aims to enhance technical skills and create employment opportunities, particularly for youth and women.
  • Private Sector Engagement: The EU is actively involving private sector players in these projects, offering de-risking financial mechanisms and public-private partnerships to drive digital infrastructure investments.
  • Support for Start-ups and Innovation: The EU also emphasizes support for the creation and scaling of tech start-ups and the fostering of innovation. Initiatives such as the Digital Transformation Centre (DTC) and Nigerian Jubilee Fellowship Programme are being co-funded by the EU and Germany, focusing on youth employment and skills training.

The EU’s approach combines infrastructure, skill-building, regulatory support, and private sector partnerships, aiming to make Nigeria a regional digital hub and create a vibrant digital economy.
