The late Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu carved a significant niche in Nigeria’s political and intellectual landscape as a distinguished scholar and political leader. Born on December 1, 1951, in Uburu, Ebonyi State, Dr. Onu’s early academic pursuits laid the groundwork for a remarkable career. He earned his first degree in Chemistry from the prestigious University of Lagos, followed by a master’s degree and doctorate in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). His academic journey included teaching positions at notable institutions like the University of Port Harcourt and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he contributed significantly to Nigeria’s scientific community through his research.

Dr. Onu entered the political arena in the early 1990s, becoming the first democratically elected governor of Abia State in 1991. Despite a short tenure, his leadership was marked by transformative policies focusing on public infrastructure, education, health care, and agriculture. He faced numerous challenges, including political turbulence and economic constraints, yet maintained a forward-looking vision that laid the groundwork for the state’s future growth.

A founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Onu’s political journey expanded when he served as the Minister of Science and Technology under President Muhammadu Buhari. In this capacity, he established the National Science, Technology and Innovation Roadmap (2017-2030), positioning Nigeria as a leader in these fields. He passionately advocated for scientific advancement and innovation, emphasizing the importance of harnessing the nation’s human resources for economic growth through technology.
