In response to concerns raised by retired veterans regarding delays in the payment of new pension allowances, the Military Pensions Board has clarified that the hold-up is due to the non-release of funds to the board, and it is unrelated to the ongoing electronic verification exercise.

In a statement issued on Monday, signed by the Chairman and directed at veterans, the board urged pensioners to dismiss rumors linking the electronic verification process with the delayed payment of the new pension rates approved by the Federal Government.

The nationwide electronic verification of military pensioners, which began on July 1, 2024, has been extended for an additional month and will conclude on October 31, 2024.

AVM Irumheson appealed for patience from the pensioners and expressed gratitude for their cooperation as the board continues to fulfill its statutory duties. He clarified that the ongoing electronic verification is a routine procedure aimed at authenticating the accurate number of pensioners on the payroll, ensuring adequate budgeting and planning.

“The Board opted for electronic verification to ease the process for pensioners, especially considering the security risks of road travel, high transportation costs, and the financial burden faced by those residing abroad,” he explained. “With this system, pensioners can complete their verification from the comfort of their homes, eliminating the need for physical gatherings, and the process has been largely successful.”

AVM Irumheson reassured veterans that no pensioner would be deprived of their entitlements, including any arrears, as the board is actively collaborating with relevant authorities to secure the necessary funds for payment.

He added that the board is maintaining transparency by regularly updating the 5-man Ministerial Standing Committee on progress made so far and advised veterans to check in with the committee for the latest information, as it serves as a crucial link between the Veterans Community and the Board.
