Nigerian singer Ayra Starr recently opened up about the vital role that cooking Nigerian meals plays in her life, especially during her busy schedule on the road. In an interactive sit-down with fellow artist Coco Jones, the two discussed their music, career progression, and their preferred ways to unwind after a long day.

Cooking as a Source of Comfort

Ayra Starr, who has always expressed her love for traditional Nigerian cuisine, particularly yam and egg, emphasized that she prioritizes home-cooked meals while traveling. “I try to eat Nigerian food wherever I am because it keeps me happy,” she said. “I be like, ‘I don’t want to eat burgers again. Are we eating burgers again?’ please.”

For her, cooking isn’t just about sustenance; it’s also a way to find peace and relaxation amidst the chaos of her career. She explained, “Sometimes I just want to eat my food, and sometimes I try to stay in serviced apartments whenever I can so that I can cook. I feel like that keeps me and centers me. Even if I’m tired from a show and it’s late, even if it’s 9, 10, or 11 p.m., cooking is relaxing for me.”

Balancing Career and Well-Being

In the interview, Ayra also touched on the importance of having a support system. She mentioned how her family and friends play a crucial role in keeping her grounded, especially during overwhelming times. “Thank God for my friends; they don’t leave me alone. We have group chats, and I still try to involve them in my life, but they get it. Sometimes I just disappear when it becomes overwhelming.”

She also highlighted her desire to take small breaks to recharge, saying, “One thing I’m going to do when I’m on the road is to make sure to have a TV show so I can disappear for three minutes to watch it; I’d watch it on my phone.”

Conclusion

Ayra Starr’s reflections on cooking and her support system reveal a deeper understanding of the importance of mental well-being in the fast-paced music industry. By prioritizing home-cooked meals and staying connected with loved ones, she manages to maintain her happiness and balance while navigating her rising career.
