President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to the late Professor Humphrey Nwosu, former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), asserting that the best way to honor Nwosu’s legacy is by ensuring credible, transparent, and democratic elections in Nigeria. Prof. Nwosu, who chaired NEC from 1989 to 1993, was instrumental in overseeing the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election, considered one of Nigeria’s most credible elections but annulled by then-leader General Ibrahim Babangida.

Tinubu’s statement, issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, emphasized that upholding democratic values would best honor Nwosu and other champions of democracy. President Tinubu reflected on Nwosu as a “bold and courageous administrator,” noting his role in introducing the innovative OPTION A-4 voting system, where voters publicly queued behind their chosen candidate’s photograph.

Expressing his condolences, President Tinubu praised Nwosu’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development and prayed for eternal rest for his soul and comfort for his family.
