A confrontation between the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Nigeria Police took a violent turn in Osogbo, Osun State, as police officers allegedly used force against NSCDC personnel deployed to secure Elizabeth Estate.
Reports indicate that on Tuesday night, plainclothes officers in police jackets entered the estate in a private vehicle to apprehend a suspect. When NSCDC personnel on duty asked for identification, a verbal confrontation ensued as the police allegedly failed to provide proof of identity and left the scene.
On Wednesday, the situation intensified when approximately 20 police officers returned to the estate, reportedly called out the NSCDC personnel on duty, and engaged in a heated argument. The situation escalated into physical violence, with police operatives allegedly assaulting the NSCDC officer, handcuffing, and detaining him.
NSCDC spokesperson in Osun State, Kehinde Adeleke, condemned the police actions, calling them “barbaric and uncivilized.” He noted that NSCDC officers had simply requested identification and that the situation could have been avoided if proper protocol had been observed. The incident highlights ongoing friction between the two security agencies and raises questions about inter-agency cooperation in sensitive operations.
