PROF. HUMPHREY NWOSU, FORMER CHAIRMAN OF NIGERIA’S NEC, PASSES AWAY AT 83

The family of Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, the former Chairman of Nigeria’s National Electoral Commission (NEC), has announced his passing. In a statement shared with Vanguard, Engr. Nnaemeka Humphrey Nwosu confirmed that Prof. Nwosu died on October 20, 2024, following a brief illness.

Described as a dedicated advocate for democracy and a respected scholar of political science and public administration, Prof. Nwosu, aged 83, left a lasting impact on Nigeria’s political landscape.

“With a profound sense of sadness and deep grief, the family of distinguished Professor Humphrey Nwosu announces his death,” the family statement read. “He served as Chairman of Nigeria’s National Electoral Commission from 1989 to 1993 and remains a hero to millions for his pivotal role in laying the democratic foundation of the country.”

Prof. Nwosu’s tenure at NEC included overseeing the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s fairest and most credible election, which established important groundwork for the nation’s democracy.

An accomplished academic, he earned degrees in Political Science from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the University of California, Berkeley, where he achieved First Class Honors and Magna Cum Laude distinctions. His notable publications, including Laying the Foundation for Nigeria’s Democracy: My Account of June 12, 1993 Presidential Election and its Annulment, contributed significantly to Nigeria’s political scholarship.

The statement honors him as a devoted family man, loving husband, father, and grandfather, as well as a generous community leader. Known as “óka ome” in his hometown of Ajalli, Anambra State, he was celebrated for his philanthropy and community development efforts.

Prof. Nwosu is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mrs. Stella Nwosu, their four children, six grandchildren, and extended family. Funeral arrangements will be announced soon.
