Some partially blind students expressed excitement on Thursday after experiencing clearer vision for the first time in years, thanks to a free eye care outreach organized by the Women and Girls with Albinism Network in Abuja. This initiative was held to commemorate the 2024 World Sight Day and benefited 115 children.
The outreach, organized in collaboration with the Public Health Department of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), was sponsored by CBM Global Disability Inclusion. Among the beneficiaries were students from Junior Secondary School Gbazango and Government Secondary School Kubwa II. Many of the students praised the organizers for helping them see more clearly.
Miss Rejoice Chinonso, a 12-year-old student living with albinism, shared her experience with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN): “It had not been easy struggling to see what is written on the board. Sometimes, I don’t even see the board or my teacher, but thanks to the Women and Girls with Albinism Network in Abuja, I can see clearly now. I feel very happy. Now my academic performance will improve. I really thank the NGO for giving children with albinism a chance to focus on their future.”
Abubakar Usman, another beneficiary from Gbazango, noted that his vision was previously cloudy. He stated, “With the help of glasses, I can see my friends clearly.”
Zafanaya Gideon also expressed her gratitude, describing the initiative as a “game changer” in her life: “The free eye check and the glasses will change my life in an immeasurable way. Thank you. I can see very well now.”
