PARTIAL COLLAPSE OF PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE IN LAGOS AVERTS DISASTER

< 1 mn read

Danger was averted on Thursday as the newly constructed pedestrian bridge at Five Stars Bus Stop, inward Iyana-Isolo, along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos, partially collapsed in the early hours.

The incident occurred around 6:30 AM, prompting a swift response from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA). Eyewitnesses reported that part of the bridge had fallen, obstructing half of the expressway.

Investigations by LASEMA revealed that the collapse was triggered by an unknown articulated truck carrying heavy-duty equipment, which collided with the bridge. This impact caused significant cracks and ultimately led to the partial collapse.

Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, confirmed that a giant forklift was deployed to remove the debris and prevent any further incidents. He added, “The entire bridge had been cordoned off by the agency’s Response Team. Decommissioning efforts of the remaining concrete members of the pedestrian bridge have been kick-started to ensure public safety.”
