RB Leipzig attacker Xavi Simons is expected to be sidelined for “several weeks” due to an ankle injury sustained during this week’s 1-0 Champions League loss to Liverpool, the German club announced on Thursday.

German media reports suggest that Simons, who is on loan from Paris Saint-Germain for a second consecutive season, could be out until the new year. The 21-year-old was substituted after 73 minutes of the match and required assistance from two members of Leipzig’s coaching staff to leave the field.

“Unfortunately, Xavi suffered a ligament injury in his left ankle in yesterday’s Champions League match against Liverpool and will be out of action for several weeks,” Leipzig stated. They added that the method of treatment is still to be determined.

Leipzig coach Marco Rose commented after the game that Simons “took a knock and is in a fair bit of pain.”

Simons had recently contributed to the Netherlands’ Euro 2024 semi-final match against England, scoring the opener in a 2-1 loss. So far this season, he has recorded two goals and one assist in seven league games.

Currently, Leipzig shares the same number of points as Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich but sits second on goal difference. They will host third-placed Freiburg on Saturday.
