PREPARING FOR THE IELTS WRITING TEST: TIPS FOR SUCCESS

Must read

< 1 mn read

Whether you are taking the general training or academic IELTS test, thorough preparation is essential for achieving a high score. The IELTS writing test is divided into two sections: Task 1, in a red answer booklet, and Task 2, in a black answer booklet, both of which must be completed within 60 minutes.

To ensure fairness and accuracy in grading, at least two experienced IELTS examiners review each script, assessing the following criteria: coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, grammatical range, and accuracy. Each criterion contributes 25% to your overall writing band score.

Plan Your Time

You have 60 minutes for both tasks: 20 minutes for Task 1 and 40 minutes for Task 2, which carries more weight. Allocate time wisely by spending 5-10 minutes understanding the question and planning your response. Dedicate 15-20 minutes for your first draft and 10 minutes for revising and editing.

Read the Question Carefully

Take time to read the question thoroughly before starting. Ensure that you answer all aspects of the task correctly—Task 1 often involves describing data or processes, while Task 2 typically requires an opinion or argument.

Highlight the Issues to Address

In Task 1, focus on trends, comparisons, or key details. For Task 2, pinpoint the viewpoints or arguments needed to support your essay. Organize your response around these elements to stay focused and clear.

By following these strategies, you’ll better manage your time and respond effectively to both tasks in the IELTS writing test.
