A cross-section of traders in Abia and Imo states has expressed deep concerns over the financial impact of a recent two-day sit-at-home order, which they say crippled their businesses and led to significant financial losses. The directive stemmed from a viral video featuring an unidentified man warning South-East residents to remain indoors on October 21 and 22 for their safety, claiming that the proscribed group, the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB), would launch its flag and Armoured Personnel Carriers during that time.

The warning sparked panic throughout the region, leading to the forced closure of markets, shops, banks, and schools. As a result, many residents complied with the order, fearing potential security repercussions from clashes between IPOB and security agencies.

Chinaka Samuel, a resident of Aba, lamented that the enforced sit-at-home has become detrimental to their economic survival. He urged the Federal Government to engage in dialogue with IPOB and to release the group’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu, to help resolve the ongoing crisis and mitigate the impact of such orders on the local economy.

Mrs. Ijeoma Kelechukwu, another trader affected by the situation, shared her struggles, stating that her family has been left without food since the order took effect. She explained that she was unaware of the sit-at-home directive after attending a burial on Friday, and as a Seventh-Day Adventist, she couldn’t shop on Saturday, further exacerbating her family’s plight.

The traders’ concerns highlight the ongoing economic challenges in the region, where such sit-at-home orders not only disrupt daily life but also threaten the livelihoods of many. They call for understanding and consideration from IPOB regarding the economic consequences of their actions, urging a balance between security concerns and the economic well-being of the community
