The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, has asserted that JAMB is the largest user of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) globally, particularly in the context of conducting examinations. He emphasized that Nigeria stands out as the only country capable of administering entry examinations for over 2 million candidates simultaneously, a feat not matched by nations such as the United States, the United Kingdom, or India.

Speaking at the 2024 International Week and 17th Annual Research Conference at the University of Lagos, themed “Inclusive Digital Transformation and the University Promise,” Oloyede highlighted the unique operational challenges faced by JAMB. He noted that, despite being a federal entity, the board operates with a centralized system that resembles a military structure, in contrast to more decentralized systems in other countries.

Oloyede elaborated on the extensive use of ICT in JAMB’s processes, stating, “From registration to examination, we leverage ICT extensively. We have implemented protective and detective mechanisms to combat any infractions during registration. Our examinations for around 2 million candidates utilize computer-based testing, which is a critical aspect of our digitization efforts.”

He also emphasized JAMB’s commitment to fairness in the admissions process, ensuring that all candidates are treated equitably through the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS). This system guarantees that no candidate is disadvantaged, as it automates the arrangement and processing of admissions.

In discussing the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Oloyede urged caution regarding the accuracy of online sources, particularly with tools like ChatGPT. He shared an example of testing the tool’s reliability, noting inaccuracies in the information provided about past Vice Chancellors of the University of Lagos. He stressed the importance of balancing the use of AI with critical thinking and verification: “We must rely on artificial intelligence, but we must do so with natural intelligence.”

Overall, Oloyede’s remarks underscore JAMB’s pioneering role in integrating ICT into the examination and admission processes, while also advocating for responsible use of emerging technologies.
