The notion that Africa is solely a land of dry seasons is a misconception. In reality, several countries experience snowfall, showcasing the continent’s geographical diversity and climatic contrasts. Here are five African countries where snow can fall:

1. SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa features a variety of landscapes, including the snow-capped Drakensberg Mountains, which attract visitors during the winter months from June to August. While snowfall is rare in major cities like Johannesburg, the mountains offer opportunities for sledding and picturesque snowy scenery.

2. MOROCCO

In Morocco, snow primarily falls between December and February, particularly in the northern regions, such as the Rif and Atlas Mountains. Temperatures can drop to -8 degrees Celsius in these areas, providing a unique winter landscape ideal for skiing and snowboarding at locations like Oukaïmeden and Michlifen.

3. TANZANIA

Tanzania’s only snowy region is Mount Kilimanjaro. The summit experiences arctic conditions, especially during the dry season from mid-June to October, with the most snowfall occurring in December. The cold temperatures during this period make Kilimanjaro a striking destination for adventurers.

4. UGANDA

Snow in Uganda is found exclusively on the peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains. These summits, often covered in snow and glaciers, attract hikers and travelers eager to witness the unique winter environment.

5. LESOTHO

Lesotho, known for its high mountain ranges, frequently experiences snowfall during the winter months from June to August. Temperatures can dip to around 0 degrees Celsius, making snow a common occurrence and transforming the landscape into a winter wonderland.

These countries highlight Africa’s climatic diversity, reminding us that the continent is not just defined by its warm climates, but also by its stunning winter landscapes.
