William Troost-Ekong, captain of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, has threatened that the team will refuse to participate in their upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya, following a troubling experience upon their arrival in the country.
The Nigerian team faced significant challenges after their flight, originally scheduled to land in Benghazi, was unexpectedly diverted to Al Abaq Airport. Upon arrival, they were subjected to an extended stay at the airport, being held for over 12 hours without permission to leave the arrival hall. The diversion forced the players and staff to undertake a two-hour journey by road to reach their destination.
In a post on social media, Troost-Ekong expressed his frustration and disappointment, detailing the adverse conditions the team faced. He noted that the airport gates were locked, leaving them without food, drinks, or phone connectivity. He remarked, “12+ hours in an abandoned airport in Libya after our plane was diverted whilst descending. The Libyan government rescinded our approved landing in Benghazi with no reason. They’ve locked the airport gates and left us without phone connection, food, or drink. All to play mind games.”
Troost-Ekong, reflecting on the severity of their treatment, stated that he has never experienced anything like this before in his football career, even during previous away matches in Africa. He also shared that the pilot, who was forced to navigate the last-minute change, had never encountered such a situation.
He described the indignity faced by the team, mentioning that upon arrival, even the crew members of the Tunisian pilot were denied accommodations and were forced to sleep on the parked plane.
In a call for intervention, Troost-Ekong urged the Nigerian Government to step in and assist the team, declaring, “As the captain, together with the team, we have decided that we will NOT play this game. CAF should look at the report and what is happening here. Even if they decide to allow. This kind of behavior, let them have the points. We will not accept to travel anywhere by road here; even with security, it’s not safe.”
The situation has raised serious concerns regarding the treatment of visiting teams and the responsibilities of host nations during international competitions. As the Super Eagles await a resolution, their commitment to standing against such treatment underscores the need for respect and fair play in sports.
