PDP Leadership Crisis: Acting National Chairman Ahmed Mohammed Accepts Role Amidst Turmoil

< 1 mn read

The ongoing leadership crisis within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continues to evolve as factional Acting National Chairman Ahmed Mohammed has formally accepted his appointment in a letter to party members. Dated October 13, 2024, the letter was made public by the suspended PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba. In his correspondence, Mohammed expressed gratitude for the support received since assuming the role and emphasized the urgent need for introspection regarding the party’s management and its function as an effective opposition.

Mohammed’s letter highlights the current “domestic events” within the party, which he believes necessitate a deep reflection on how the PDP can better fulfill its role as a credible opposition in Nigeria’s political landscape. He noted that internal conflicts have hindered the party’s effectiveness, admitting, “Regrettably, we must admit that we have not satisfactorily carried out the critical role expected of a virile opposition in a democracy.”

In his message, he reaffirmed the importance of returning to the founding principles of the PDP, focusing on equity, fairness, and justice. His immediate objective is to rebuild trust among party members, facilitating the long-awaited National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting set for October 24, 2024. He also called on the North Central Zone to nominate a replacement for former National Chairman Sen. Iyorchia Ayu.

However, the PDP is grappling with additional challenges. A recent court ruling has prevented the Umar Damagum-led National Working Committee (NWC) from removing Mohammed as Acting National Chairman, further complicating the party’s leadership struggles.

As the PDP navigates these tumultuous times, the party’s ability to unite and refocus on its core values will be critical for its future effectiveness as a robust opposition party in Nigeria’s democracy.
