The United States and India have topped the list of countries submitting films for the upcoming Rivers International Film Festival (RIFF), which will take place in October in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Mrs. Kate Ezeigbo, the Director of RIFF, made this announcement during a press briefing, revealing that out of 2,230 films submitted from 172 countries, the U.S. and India had the most entries.

Launched in October 2023, RIFF is Rivers State’s first indigenous film festival, aiming to boost local tourism and empower filmmakers. Ezeigbo highlighted that the festival has grown significantly, with the maiden edition receiving 582 films from 82 countries, compared to this year’s 2,230 entries.

“The festival is designed to educate and empower the next generation of filmmakers,” Ezeigbo stated, pointing out that the increase in submissions shows the potential for strengthening socio-cultural relationships between Rivers State, Nigeria, and the participating countries.

RIFF has a strong focus on films addressing important social issues like gender inequality, sexuality, power dynamics, security, and racism. It encourages films that promote social justice, highlight marginalized communities, and explore diverse topics such as technology, medicine, and spirituality.

In addition to promoting creativity, RIFF is committed to the well-being of filmmakers. Ezeigbo explained that the festival has launched the RIFF Free Medicals initiative to support film practitioners, who often face health challenges due to the demanding nature of their work. The initiative provides free surgeries, routine health checks, and medication for filmmakers and critics.

Other impactful programs tied to the festival include RIFF Empowers, Pitch Your Project, Tour Rivers, and Rivers Film Projects, all aimed at enhancing the creative industry in the region.
